    ● Brief discussion of ship, engines
    ● If you are 2nd engineer joining a ship, what are the first things you need to do?
    ● Talk through a procedure of opening up a big end bearing for repair or survey – he
initially said it can be for any engine type, then ended up wanting the procedure for a
2-stroke. Lifting gear requirements, how will you know it’s suitable for use?
    ● Which area of big end, main & crosshead bearings take the load?
    ● Draw a start air system, showing how reversing is done. Examiner asked for a ‘block
diagram’ – I asked whether he wanted a block diagram or system drawing, and he
said ‘block diagram’ – he then asked a few questions on the drawing and said it
wasn’t detailed enough, so was looking for more of a system drawing.
    ● Draw a start air valve
    ● What pressure is the starting air and the pilot air?
    ● Bunkering – discussion of safety checks, checklists and precautions, tank soundings
and filling, samples and time they have to be retained on board, contents of BDN,
max sulphur content, recording in engine + bridge log book
    ● SECA’s location and sulphur content
    ● How is the jacket water temperature maintained in the main engine?
    ● Explain or draw a PID controller
    ● Hunting gear – detailed description of mechanism, not just function & operation with
    pump
    ● What kind of pumps would be in a steering gear system?
    ● Steering gear requirements/regulations. Auto changeover requirements and
    differences for tankers
    ● Leakage from a plate heat exchanger, what will you instruct your 3rd Eng to do to
repair? One plate found damaged, what will you do?
    ● On starting a generator there is no voltage developed, what will you do? What
precautions to be taken if field flashing to restore magnetism – was looking for
    consideration of damage to electronics.
    ● Fire plans – what information contained within them to assist firefighting especially for
shore-side fire teams (location & type of FFA, layout of compartments,
    ventilation/bulkheads)
    ● Centrifugal pump wear ring – what is its purpose, what happens if it has excessive
wear, what effects will there be?
    ● Rudders – what bears the weight, what is the purpose of the rudder pintles, what will
be the effect of excessive clearance in pintles, why is a jumping clearance provided?
    ● Showed the drawing of a cross section of a bulk carrier – asked to name
    components arrowed + some others
    ● Stability – how to define centre of buoyancy
    ● Explain ‘M’ (metacentre), how is it calculated
    ● Explain Free Surface Effect
    ● Explanation of GZ righting lever
    ● What will happen if there is a list due to unevenly distributed cargo/tanks (expained
    with drawing of M/CoG/CoB)
    ● ISM – discussion of purpose, contents, SMS requirements, applications for 2nd
engineer. Period of validity of SMC, period of intermediate audit/survey
    ● MLC – discussion about contents. Complaints procedure if not resolved onboard/by
    office.
    Plus probably some others
