1 hour1. He asked me about my ship. I gave him a brief description and I told him I had that it was diesel electric. And he Asked me about the Cylinder bore
2. Asked me how we took engine performance. Explained the procedure and that it was and electronic peak pressure indicator so the equations for calculating power we down in the computer.
3. He then asked to draw a power card and explain how power is developed.
4. Asked about safeties on start air compressors.
5. Asked what safeties on M/E start system.
6. Why do they have flame arresters and bursting discs.
7. What temperature is your jacket water normally set at?
8. The jacket water temperature is fluctuating from high to low. What would you do? I told him I would remove the sensor and test it and replace it if necessary.
9. He then asked what would you do if it was critical to keep the engine running?
10. What to you understand about critical machinery?
11. Went onto fuel treatment and asked how you would accommodate for different density fuels in the purifier.
12. What is a gravity and what does it do?
13. Do a complete overhaul of one unit including all the paperwork and safeties involve.
14. You’re in drydock and the chief is busy, so he’s asked you to take the surveyor and do an inspection of the ship’s bottom. Explain how you would do this.
15. What happens to the CO2 system in drydock?
16. Why do we need boiler water treatment?
17. Asked me about boiler water coagulant.
18. Test boiler safety valve procedure.
19. What do you know about large motor starting methods?
20. Asked me to draw a star-delta starter and explain it.

25. Asked about what is special about steering gear motors. (told me to look into this at the end because I didn’t know what he was looking for).
26. What is free surface affect. (I spoke about what we learned in the course the day before)
27. Two new cadets are about to join your vessel how will you handle there training? What would you do? I spoke about making sure they did their safety induction and had done all there familiarization and were aware of all company policies. Also that I would go through their training record books and plan what maintenance is coming up that they would benefit from if they were involved.
28. He asked me to name some of the certificates onboard, stopped me half way through and asked about ones pertaining to ISM. I said about SMC DOC. I also mention that the SMC, MLC 2006 & ISSC were all done together.
29. How does ISM affect you as a 2nd Engineer.
30. Carry out enclosed space entry into a fuel tank.
31. What oxygen percentage are you looking for?
32. What LEL are you looking for?
33. What kind of gas tester would you use for testing the atmosphere.
34. Does your ship have it’s own fresh water production?
35. What are the important considerations to freshwater makers? I told him 20 miles from land etc.
36. Rules pertaining to fire protection to bulkheads. I mentioned about everything in MSN 1668. A class bulkheads etc.
37. What tests would you do on your fixed fire fighting systems? I explained whats done on ships water mist.
