Fail
1 hour 30 minsHe tells you after each question what you missed and explains how its a major point so I knew quite early i had failed. You can’t miss anything from any scenario.
Not a lot of time given to give full answers if you are stuck, just jumped in and tells you what you’ve missed.
Nothing goes unnoticed so don’t say anything you aren’t sure of as he will jump on it.
Make sure you answer everything in perfect order in terms of Emergency/Failures.Tell me about ‘Jura’ your last ship.
List all certs on last vessel. Didn’t stop. He said the ones i missed which were minor and also some not even applicable to my last vessel.
How do you comply with isps as a master? Rattled a lot of stuff off and he still wasn’t happy. Kept saying my answers were all the same as they were covered in the ssp so that threw me completely.
What are the 4 key areas of ISPS?
How often do you do security drill?
Testing interval for SSAS?
Mid ocean. 3/0 calls you and says having difficulty maintaining course: gyro failure. He said I didnt answer this very well and this was the main area I failed in.
What happens to Radar if gyro fails?
How do you comply with marpol annexe VI on last ship? Where are the ECAs? Whats the requirements in an ECA? Asked do you still burn the 0.1% in port? Wasn’t sure, he said you definitely don’t so go and double check when you return to your ship.
Sign on 2/E – thought my answer was good, only missed security cert which was a slip of the mind but he made a big deal about it and didn’t give me a lot of time to think about it either! He also didn’t accept the term Flag State Equivalent and wanted to hear Certificate of Equivalent Competency instead.
Masters obligations under carriage of cargoes regulations? Didn’t really know so just rattled off some things about keeping cargo safe.
DG container to be loaded, how do you know you can? What other docs you need? What information must the shipper provide? Mentioned imdg and he shared a screenshot of a page from imdg code. Pointed at a column and asked what is ‘limited quantities’ – i had no idea. Then asked what ‘F-B S-X’ in the EmS column was.
Contents of cargo securing manual? What are the two different types of cargo securing? I have never come across this in my life.
What docs tell you you are UMS?
Call at 2am, boiler fixed water mist gone off. I followed SPARRC as best I could but it wasn’t enough for him. It went into out of control and co2 release into engine room. Various questions asked during this were: whos closing the manual vents? What fuel lines are you shutting off?
List all the health and safety legislation in the UK?
What is in the Merchant Shipping Working at Height Regulations?
How often do you do lifeboat drill?
Go through full procedures of a lifeboat launch. I was a bit rusty as I haven’t sailed with them since I was a cadet – I mentioned this and he wasn’t happy so best just memorise the procedure if you haven’t sailed with them. I forgot about moving gripes before a ‘test launch’.
What are the two different methods for launching a lifeboat?
3/O calls you – fog – actions? Listed everything I could and he said I missed performance monitor on radar..
He put up a radar plot with two targets with relative vectors and info for both (cpa, tcpa, speed, course).
One vl on stbd bow and one on port quarter overtaking. What are they both doing, what will you do and what will they do?
What rules are based on aspect?
What is rule 15?
Shared screen with smarty board questions. Wanted me to fully identify and take action:
CBD crossing from stbd to port. Action and what rules apply.Pilot vessel crossing port to stbd. Action.
Sailing vessel seen from astern. Overtaking action.
End.
