    Chief officer unlimited
    Online exam – Humber and Tyne office
    Background: Container, yacht, pax
    Time – 1 hour 40min
    Result – Pass

    Started with the genera run through of exam procedures, explained about cheating and screen recording is not allowed. Asked me to show him I had a pen and blank paper to write on if needed. Then we proceeded into the questions

    1. Tell me about your last vessel
    2. Ok, you are joining your last vessel as chief officer, explain where you can find information about your job and how to do it
    3. As I told him the job description as chief officer on my last vessel he wrote the items down the c/o is responsible for and he reffered back to them during the exam
    4. What is the main certificate concerning passenger ships
    5. You are re-entering service, your PSSC is expiring, what will you do to prepare as chief officer to prepare for this survey
    6. During the PSSC inspection the surveyor takes you to the bridge, explain how to test the safety contour alarm
    7. How to set the correct safety contour correctly – gave me a draft, required UKC and squat and I had to calculate the correct contour
    8. Tell me about your monthly LSA/FFE checks
    9. Tell me about your annual/5yearsly LSA inspections
    10. Who are doing these inspections? Who is required to be present during these
    11. What is changed during the 5 yearly – he was asking about wires
    12. You said c/o was responsible for stability, draw the loadline marks or your previous vessel
    13. Can you explain what FWA allowance is
    14. You are alongside in brackish water, how do you calculate your DWA – He wanted the formula
    15. On the marks you have drawn, what does the C1 mean?
    16. What regulations do the C1 come from
    17. Explain how you do your departure stability on your ship
    18. The observed drafts are different to the ones on the stability computer, what do you do?
    19. What can you find in the ship stability booklet
    20. What reports could be found in the booklet (inclining and lightship)
    21. Tell me about the inspection of lifting appliances onboard – who can do the inspections
    22. What would you check on an annual inspection
    23. How would you test the SWL on 5 yearly
    24. Bosun comes to you and says he heard a noise from the crane, how would you approach this
    25. What regulations cover lifting appliances
    26. Tell me more about LOLER – we spent a lot of time on this
    27. What is PUWER
    28. You are now required to inspect a fresh water tank – tell me about the procedures you would follow to enter an enclosed space
    29. What is specific about a Fresh water tank
    30. You are now testing the atmosphere, what gases are we looking for
    31. Under what regulations are you doing all of these safety measures under – again a lot of time was spent here
    32. Explain what is safe speed
    33. Explain about rule 5, proper lookout
    34. Then showed me an NUC right head, actions
    35. Then showed me the below, asked which rules applied

    36. Asked more about rules 8 f i, ii, ii

    Once this was answered he then went through the exam, where he corrected me on some points and he was satisfied with my answers and I had now passed.

    The examiner was very fair, where I was stuck or wasn’t sure what he was looking for, he would try and prompt me further to get the answer he was looking for.

    By no means was this a perfect exam, struggled through certain parts (especially LOLER) but I managed to get myself through.
