    CHIEF MATE UNLIMITED (OBIORAH ONYEKA)
    Duration: 2hrs 20mins
    Examiner: TOM ANDREWS
    RESULT: PASS
    I logged on about 40mins before the exam time. The surveyor came on about 10mims earlier than scheduled. He introduced himself. We had a little discussion prior to the usual online examination protocols. He clearly told me that he’ll put me on a UK bulk carrier, LNG and LPG vessels in the course of the exams as both chief mate and master of < 3000gt.
    You have finished loading the LPG ship, tell me how you will prepare the vessel for departure?
    You mentioned about stability of the vessel, what are the intact stability criteria for your vessel?
    If you are on a bulk carrier carrying grain, what would have been your minimum GM?
    What is the concern with timber cargo?
    What is the concern with loading iron ore?
    What other concerns for high density cargoes?.
    What is GM, free surface effect? What are dangers of free surface in a bulk carrier?
    What is BM, SF… how do they act on the vessel.
    Tell me all the certificates available for merchant vessels and their tonnage requirement?
    You mentioned ISM DOC and SMC, tell me about those.
    Draw me a loadline of your vessel.
    How would you manually calculate the quantity of iron ore loaded?
    You have just sailed and the weather forecast for the next few days appears bad, what are your actions as chief mate?
    How would you get your bosun go forward in bad weather to secure the forward bosun store?… Safety line must have been rigged prior to the onset of bad weather, also we have under deck pipe passage way.
    Sailing from Nigeria to barcelona, how would you know where to load your vessel to, assuming barcelona is a fresh water port?
    How would you calculate the FWA.
    You are relaxing in your cabin as a master on <3000gt, the fire alarm went off and it’s a fire in the incinerator room… actions?
    You have routine ballast tank inspection, two personnel went into the tank and one of them collapsed… action as chief mate?
    Which publication talked about Enclosed space entry?
    You talked about re-verifying the enclosed space procedure, how would you go about it?
    Who do you inform about the enclosed space incident?
    How do you report it?
    Who reports it?
    Tell me the duties of a safety officer that you mentioned?
    As per solas ch. 3 all LSA’s onboard requires a maintenance… tell me about the maintenance required for every LSA onboard?.
    Laoding LNG as a chief mate, what are the three basic considerations?
    Temp, density, specific gravity etc.
    Aside your loadicator, how else can you confirm the stability calculations?
    How often do you test your loadicator?
    How is the test done?
    What are the pre-calculated conditions used in your loadicator?
    The master just informed you about the upcoming loadline survey, how do you go about it?
    What can you burn in your incinerator?
    How would you manage sludge in an oil tanker?
    What information can you derive using the manual draft reading you mentioned very early in this exams?
    Tell me about the hours of rest of your crew onboard.
    What kind of jobs will you assign a young person?
    Why cant he do work aloft?… Lack of situational awareness.
    You are delayed from entering port and you were asked to anchor the vessel in an anchorage with strong wind and a very limited swinging area, how would you go about it?…… Make use of two anchors.
    What would you consider prior to anchoring?.
    What would your gas meter measure prior to enclosed space entry?
    What do you report to MAIB?
    He showed me a radar picture and asked if I will be happy with the duty officer? Lots were wrong with the radar settings.
    How would you instruct your officers to keep a safe navigational watch?
    Master’s standing orders
    As per the Ism, the master is instructed to do what?
    Master’s overriding authority… tell me about it?
    Will you as a master decide not to comply with an element of the ISM because of your overriding authority?
    How do you manage ballast onboard?
    ROR
    NUC, CBD, FV with outlaying gear… identify and take action.
    Buoyage:
    Isolated danger, special water mark, region-A pref channel to port, East cardinal mark, … identify all. No bouyed channel.
    Res Vis:
    Two targets, one on port bow and the other on stbd quarter with own vsl hdg 000. He gave me own vessels’ course and speed And asked that I complete the plot and take action.. I asked for the targets bearings, course, speed, completed the plot, and took action afterwards.
    He asked why I slowed down and I explained… at this point he said we’ve come to the end of the exams and it is a PASS.
