1st attempt
Fail
Examiner: Nayer Naqvi
Experience: passenger ships
• Container vessel 60,000gt
• You’ve joined the vessel as master and you’ve met the outgoing master how will you take over
• What certificates would you take over for that type of ship
• What is CSSC? (examiner says it doesn’t exist, the discussion completely threw me, and this is where I lost it for the rest of exam)
• How would you prepare for an MLC audit
• What’s in a DMLC1 + DMLC2
• What insurance does the company need relating to MLC
• You have a 17 year old cadet just joined what will you brief him with regards to work on board
• Going from Antwerp to Singapore, what would you expect from chief engineer
• Then asked about chief mate, second mate for the voyage to Singapore
• Helmsman reports steering sluggish, actions?
• Fire in container on the forward, actions?
• Who would you report it to?
• You’re in the Indian ocean now what weather would you expect?
• What is synchronous rolling
• In the heavy rolling chief cook injures himself how would you deal with it
• You require a medivac what are your actions
• Now the chief cook has left what are your actions for the situation you’re left with
• You’re going to go for deepwater anchoring how would you do it
• You’re going for emergency drydock in Mumbai and you’re going to pick up the anchor but see an unknown man coming from the forward how would you deal with it.
• What would you want to arrange with the yard when you’re in the dock?
• What would you do before re-floating
• Magnetic compass – showed me picture of compass, pointed at parts asked me what they are for and what they correct.
• Synoptic chart, pointed at an occluded front, what is it?
• Buoyage: IALA A, starboard lateral, preferred channel to starboard, emergency wreck, safe water, isolated danger.
• Radar screen with a few plots, nothing challenging.
• ROR:
Lights:
• single white light everything it can be,
• ram towing vsl <50m tow>200
• fv with gear extending
• aground
• CBD
All in all it was a fair exam just without the awkward discussion at the beginning, it came down to my initial panic and then lack of confidence which led me to give incomplete answers. My failing points were the certification and then answering in a way that is confidently as a master. All the best to the remaining guys!! -
