Examiner: Captain Mohammad Iqbal
Result: Pass
Duration: 1 hour
Experience: Crude Oil Tankers.
Logged on 10mins prior to exam and examiner joined immediately. Had several problems
with regards to some disturbances in line. The examiner was kind enough to allow me to
sort out the audio problems prior to commencing the exams. Had a delay of around 15 mins
with regards to start of the examination. After a lot of different methods managed to rectify
the issue.
He then asked about my previous experience and type of ships sailed on / areas sailed /
cargo carried. He then put me as a Master of my previous vessel Crude Oil Tanker- Suezmax.
1. How you take over from the outgoing Master straight away from his cabin?
– I mentioned the previous check of ship side and safe access. Stated prior taking over
will carry out the safety and security familiarisation which he was very happy. Heard a
few points of takeover and moved on to the next question.
2. Which certificates will you takeover?
– Rattled off the entire list and moved on to the next question.
3. What is ACS and which certificates are issued under ACS
– Standard answer of safety, security and pollution MCA and the remainder class.
4. Relation between DOC and SMC.
5. MLC certificate and its validity along with interval of Audit
6. Voyage from Fujairah to Shanghai what considerations as a Master?
– Started off with APEM and different aspects of the voyage load lines/ security/
weather/ traffic density
7. How to guide a new chief mate on the quantity to load
– CP instruction on max loadable and keeping in mind to prevent any contravention of
Load lines.
8. Pilot indicates steering sluggish what actions?
– Mentioned and corrective actions accordingly for squat.
9. During passage 2/O reports MF distress received actions?
– Mentioned the actions as and OSC and coordination with SMC.Also indicated will
issue a Sea protest for deviation for the voyage. Thus manged to explain the NOP and
how to protect myself from any commercial liability.
10. Own vessel collides with a fishing boat actions?
11. The progressive flooding is to such an extent that you need to Abandon Ship. Actions
– Indicated will try my best to save the vessel by advise from ERS and own actions as a
Master but had to proceed with the Abandon Ship situation.
12. Cabin inspection you find a cigarette bud?
– Actions as per Merchant Navy Code of Conduct.
13. How will you carry out Running Mooring?
14. 2Off reported a large deviation in magnetic compass?
– Retentive error and checks of compass as a Master

– Open Sea PDV crossing from port side
– TSS ferry crossing from starboard side
– Open Sea fishing vessel gear extending more than 150 m and RAM Crossing from Port
Side?
Lights and actions
– CBD probably 50 m or more
– Dredger stopped or at Anchor
– Towing vessel length of tow > 200 m
– Mine clearance vessel at Anchor seen from Stern
Radar Plotting
– Heading 000 T and two vessel crossing from Port and Starboard side actions as per
Rule 19.
Buoys
– Region a Port Lateral Mark
– Preferred Channel to Port
– Emergency Wreck Marking buoy
– Safe Water Mark.
– Isolated Danger Mark.
At this moment Capt. Mohammad Iqbal stopped the exam and said I have passed. Was
happy with the bulk of my answers. Many thanks to Capt. Vinil, Capt. Vishnu, GMA and the
rest of the batch for the help and support. -
