1) Taking over in the cabin, what document do you expect to fill up?
OLB, List of crew
2) On the bridge with the 2/O, what will you go through?
Mentioned: Wheelhouse poster, brief instructions on nav equipment, ECDIS
(talked extensively about safety settings and other info to setup, visual check of the
route), PP, UKC calcs, RADAR tests following checking of RADAR mast, ensure
pilot card is ready and RA for Passage plan prepared so I can approve it.
3) Which certificate issued by MCA under ACS and which under EAS?
4) What is the difference between EAS and ACS?
5) What is MRV with regards to MARPOL Annex VI?
6) BWE: a) What are the criteria and b) what you can do if you’re in
North Sea and cannot comply with exchange criteria (read MSN
1908)?
7) How would you carry out 5 yearly load test of Freefall lifeboat?
Mentioned: RA, Crew briefing, PPE, presence of surveyor and service
engineers. Also, that the boat is loaded with weight 1.1x its load (assuming
all persons and equipment). If it is launched without anyone onboard, the
release mechanism to be tested separately.
8) How would you prepare for 3 months launching of regular lifeboat?
There are a lot of hazards associated with it.
Mentioned: RA, crew briefing, check the atmosphere inside, go inside
check bottom plug, all ok, test engine. When ready deploy ladder first and
then lower lifeboat so crew can embark from the ladder onto it. Otherwise
use a service boat to transfer the crew. He wanted to hear the guidance as
per MGN 560, that the lifeboat is to be lowered and heaved once empty,
before crew can go inside and lowered with operating crew.

9) VDR has error with the reception microphones, 3 days before port
Get the ETO to fix it. If not able inform DPA, arrange for Service Engineers. Do
RA and corrective action plan (like increasing record keeping or using other
devices to record sound), raise NC against company (if it is due to lack of spare
parts for example) and root cause analysis to avoid it from happening again. If we
reach port and it still can’t be fixed, ask for dispensation from MCA.
10) 2/E missing before departure. Actions?
Don’t forget to mention contacting the UK embassy.
11) Accommodation ladder 5 yearly load test and preparing for it. read MSC
1331/2009
12) What is MLC substantial equivalent (read MGN 472) and what is the
procedure?
13) LRIT: what certificate is associated with it?
14) GPS switches to DR mode before arrival in port. What would you do?
Mentioned some of the GPS errors and then said if it can’t be fixed, find suitable
anchorage.
15) What factors would you consider for the suitable anchorage?
Mentioned nature of ground, depth (windlass is built to lift anchor chain plus three
shackles), weather (wind and currents), number of other vessels anchored.
16) Which anchor will you use port or starboard?
Mentioned about using the port or starboard based on the hemisphere, as Coriolis
force comes into play and leads the vessel away from the cable. Not sure if that’s
what he was looking for.
17) Scrubbers used for SOx, which type has limitations in port (open vs closed)?

18) At sea, 2/O calls you and says he received distress about life
raft 20nm away with two persons. What do you do?
Mentioned actions, he wanted to hear how would I calculate the datum.

Mentioned human error in calculating the datum, so re do it. Commence
expanding square search. Didn’t go into limitations or ask me about other types
of searches.
21) How would you lift them onboard?

25) Enclosed space entry of ballast tank procedures?
Don’t forget isolation of the valves.

a) Tug and tow with diamond on both coming from port.
b) Vessel aground right ahead.
27) Vessel following traffic lane of TSS and a PDV crossing TSS
from port to starboard. There is also another vessel astern of us at
some distance and land on our starboard side. Actions?
I mentioned slowing down and keeping an eye out on the CPA
with the vessel astern.
29) Lights. Identify and action.
a) Vessel engaged in fishing underway and making way seen from
astern with gear extending on her starboard side?
b) CBD crossing from port side. Actions? -
