    Masters Orals
    Examiner: Kaiser Ali
    Date: 12th Dec 2022

The Examination began 5 minutes late with the examiner giving a brief about the codes and conduct for the exam. Once done, he made sure I was comfortable, had a piece of paper and pen and a glass of water next to me.
Then he commenced with the following topics:

    1. How is the ISM legislated in the UK and internationally.
    2. How will you implement ISM as a master. – PMVCR
    3. How will an external party go about carrying out MLC inspection.
-This was in-depth followed by complaint procedures onboard
    4. He asked me which all Annex of Marpol are related to my vessel, Gas carriers.
    5. A lot of questions regarding various annex and criteria, Special areas, discharge requirements.
    6. Which latest (the last few years) entries you have to do additionally in Garbage record book?
Luckily I told him two and he stopped me and carried forward –
the answer he was looking for was galley oil and E-waste.
    7. He asked me how will I implement Annex-5 and Annex-6 onboard.
    – A lot of things about GMP, placards, trainings, Galley etc for Annex 5
    – ECA areas, company policy, EEMP, Fuel specs etc for Annex 6
    8. What understanding do you have for young person onboard.
-All the required work and rest criteria
    9. What is PSC and how do they carry out inspections in Paris MoU.
    – Basically everything regarding Thetis and High,Low,Medium risk
    criteria
    10. Is there any other way PSC will board your vessel for inspection other than the above?
    – I told him they might board the vessel due some whistleblower onboard for any activity which is not compliant, any pilot or external authority noticing eg. Loadline submerged more than required. He stopped me and seemed satisfied and carried forward.
    11. How will I plan for a voyage from New York to Southampton.
Everything from passage planning to management meetings, fuel, ration etc
    12. He asked me that your 2nd off calls you at night and informs that he has seen some red shooting stars. The interesting part was that he had placed me in HRA region.
Before I began to answer I cross verified to him that the situation you have placed me in is in HRA so I will take it into account and if that is not the case my answer will be entirely different. He confirmed that the vessel is in HRA and I proceeded with the answer.
    13. Now he told me that I had crossed Suez canal, and my duty officer informed me that the cook has spilled oil on himself.
I told him everything, from first aid to asking for medivac including sending all his vitals and medicines I have given to him in the report.
Helicopter evacuation and then he stopped me and said that will do and we proceed for ROR and situations.

He told me that he liked the way I have answered and it has been going good but if I make any mistake further then there is no coming back or second chance
(In my mind it was like I will definitely clear if I don’t goof up ROR)

    14. A lot of smarty boards and I had to mention Aspect, Sound signal,Day shape, action etc: Vessel aground, NUC making way, SV, Trawler, RAM making way. (There were quite a few more but I cant recollect)

    15. Buoyage and the standard way Vinil has taught us with main to preferred, vice versa, going in with where to pass various buoys.

(Almost all situations were region-b situations)

    16. RV- what I understood, what not to do in RV if you detect a vessel on radar.
    17. Your AB tells you that he can hear fog horn but you cant see anything.
(Standard answer we have practiced so many times)
ROR was real smooth as we have practised this so many time in class and my suggestion to everyone keep practicing the ROR quiz again and again every few days especially a couple of days prior the exam because I had forgotten a few when I was doing my final revision but I went through all the slides again which really helped.

Finally thanks a lot to all the teachers and to all my mates. Good luck and wishing you all the best.
