    Joined the meeting 15 minutes in advance and Karen joined right on time. She explained the exam procedures and asked me to show her my desk and a quick 360 of the room.

    1. Tell me about your last ship and your experience?
    2. What certificates would you expect to have on your last vessel with regards to MARPOL?
    3. Tell me everything about MARPOL Annex 1, what certificates and logbooks will you have?
    4. What is mentioned on each certificate and what is recorded in the ORB’s?
    5. How will you check that the ORB is being completed properly?
    6. What would you expect to be in the Chief Engineers standing orders?
    7. Tell me everything about MARPOL Annex 6, what certificates and logbooks will you have?
    8. What is recorded in each logbook?
    9. How would you prepare for a fuel change over prior to entering an ECA zone?
    10. Where would you get information regarding your own procedures for this?
    11. You mentioned that you work on the North Sea spot market carrying out time charters, explain how they work?
    12. What would you do if the charterer was pushing you to depart port, but your crew have gone over their rest hours?
    13. Your crew have gone over their rest hours but there is an emergency, what are your actions?
    14. Explain MLC and what certificates you will have, what is on each? Validity etc?
    15. Explain ISPS, what certificate you will have?
    16. PFSO wants to see your SSP, what bits can you show them?
    17. PFSO is getting upset because you won’t show him the whole SSP, what are your actions?
    18. Explain ISM to me and how it affects you as Master?
    19. How will you prepare for a load line survey and what items will be checked during the survey?
    20. What is free trim?
    21. Explain parametric rolling and synchronised rolling?
    22. What vessels are likely to experience parametric rolling?
    23. Actions as Master for both?
    24. What are your duties with regards to cadets and what would you do with them after signing them on the vessel?
    25. Cadet decides that he/she wants to quit, is that ok? How would you proceed?
    26. Your vessel is entering port and the steering fails so you run aground, what are your initial actions?
    27. Who are you going to inform?
    28. What certificates will be affected? (Wanted to hear safe manning document as it was a steering gear failure).
    29. What are you concerns with regards to ebb tide and vessel’s stability?
    30. What is a prohibition notice?
    31. What is an improvement notice?
    32. What is a detention notice?
    33. 3/O calls you up at night to say that an NUC on your port bow is not altering for you, what are your initial actions and following concerns with the 3/O?
    34. What would you do as Master, are you going to leave the 3/O alone on the bridge after this?

    • Usual lights/shapes/buoys.
    • TSS following the traffic lane, PDV directly astern and anther overtaking slowly on your starboard side but still just behind you. Fishing vessel crossing from Starboard to Port.
    • Why wouldn’t you alter to Starboard?
    • What rules apply in restricted visibility?
    • Two radar plots, nothing unusual. Explain rule 19 and action?
    • Vessel entering a narrow channel, showed in the screen two buoyed routes with a preferred channel to port in the middle. Which way are you going to proceed?
    • What region is the buoy and how would you know at night that it is a preferred channel to Port?
    • Vessel in a narrow channel again, RAM vessel directly ahead engaged in underwater operations. What side are you going to pass?

    35. What stresses are you going to experience on your vessel at sea?
    36. STCW certs what are they and which ones need to be renewed?
