    Orals Report
    09:00 Thursday 21st March 2024 – Online Teams Call
    Candidate: S. Fairbairn
    Examiner: Capt. C. Leggett
    Result: Pass
    Preamble:
    As with most exams, it has become a bit of a blur.
    Capt. Leggett did his best to put me at ease by asking some informal questions.
    The questions asked may seem simple, but I did my best to answer from the perspective of the
    Master and bring in my knowledge of rules and regulations for an unlimited ticket. Whenever I
    was on the right track, he moved onto something else. If the question was a bit vague, he
    pointed me in the direction to answer.
    Capt. Leggett was very interested to know, how well I know my previous vessel.
    Exam:
     Usual pre-exam briefing, code of conduct, camera tour of room.
     Asked to show proof of identity and discharge book (talked about first few ships as cadet
    with SCS shipping general cargo and recent experience in o􀆯shore windfarm SOV. Capt.
    Leggett was very clued up on o􀆯shore vessels and in particular knew my ship well.

     How to take over ship has Master:
     5 C’s of Seaworthiness
     List vessel certification
     Passage from UK to Brazil, things to consider as master – I discussed route, weather
    routing, TRS, crewing, provisions, fuel, machinery spares, allsorts. Capt. Leggett
    specially wanted to know about seafarers employment agreement, tour of duty and
    moving the ship to Brazil would a􀆯ect
     Synoptic Chart, explained weather systems and particular weather in certain area
     Respond to Distress of FV 6nm away, in range of CG VHF
     How to launch rescue boat
     Injury to seafarer onboard – Post accident – who to inform (Flag, Class, MAIB), consider
    safe manning etc.
     COLREGS:
     V/L Aground, Dead Ahead
     SV on port side showing additional sailing lights, stbd aspect
     PDV, port side
     Vessel at anchor, port side
     Buoyage (showed direction of buoyage and North):
     Safe water mark
     Wreck
     Region B Pref Ch. Stbd
    (Capt. Leggett stopped me after the first few buoys as he could see I’ve worked for Trinity House
    and knew my AtoNs)
     Radar Plot:
    Actions: slow down, asked me if I could go to Stbd. I said yes I can go to Stbd, discussed
    obligations between vessels and use of trail manoeuvre.
