    Master Unlimited –Resit
    Examiner – Delowar H Time : 2.5 Hours

    Exam Started same as any other, quick bit of chit chat, what’s your experience etc. . Scanned the room and checked my ID and ran through T’s&C’S.

    He did state he would only accept my first answer as a ships master and there were a few occasions he reminded me of this when I rushed to answer. As such he would tell me to sip water which was a good promote to slow down!

    Then went into the syllabus.
    He put me on chemical tanker.

    • Joining as master from Jetty and what you will be check on gangway.
    o Taking over as a master.
    o What statutory certificates you will take over
    o What cargo documents you will be take over.
    • Cargo operation
    o How to load new cargo on chemical tanker.
    o What is your role as a master on receiving new cargo order.

    At this point of the exam he switched to a power point with his questions on, which initially through me somewhat
    • MLC
    o Describe Masters responsibility under MLC
    o Under which statutory requirement in which crew have right to complained on board. As a master what action, you will take over on that complained.
    • Electronic navigation
    • When would you Test the VDR
    • Show me radar screen & tell him this is ground stabilize or sea stabilize .
    • What I difference between ground stabilize and sea stabilize.
    • Asked for a True bearing of an object with a HWB of 2 degrees

    • He then showed me a Northern Hemisphere TRS with a ship in position on the Right Back Quadrant:
    o Actions to clear TRS
    o What are your considerations as Master
    • Salvage
    o You Black out in the TRS and a vessel offers assistance but Refuses to use LOF what are you going to do.
    o Article 13 & 14 Describe
    o SCOPIC Describe
    • Describe Note of Protest and when you would issue it

    • At what Latitude would your Gyro and Mag compass be unreliable

    • Squat
    o What is it
    o When would you expect to experience it
    • Vessel Grounds Actions as master
    o Subsequent actions
    • GZ Curve
    o Draw it and describe it for a stable ship
    • GMDSS
    o Responding to a Mayday in A3 on VHF
    • Limitations of ARPA
    • GPS fail how will you set your radar to ground stabilize.

    o Literally asked everything to do with ECDIS standards and presentation libraries
    o He showed me a few symbols and asked what they were
    o What is scamin and disadvantage of SCAMIN.

    • Then moved into Buoyage, ROR and Res Vis

    o Situations
    o vessels in a TSS, fishing vessel crossing from port side.
    o PDV on Port Side and 2nd. Off give five short ballast and call you on bridge. Action as a master. Showing on radar screen TRUE brg , COURSE of own vsl and Target vsl.- basically find out Aspect of target vsl and then ans.
    • Lights
    o Asked me to describe All the lights on the page and sound signals and actions:
     Me PDV, Vessel ahead aground
     Me PDV,Vessel ahead NUC Under way making way (slightly heading off Stbd) ask me heading of NUC vsl. – this is the point where I was stuck.

    • Bouys
    o Wanted entire thing for them, ID, Lights,Top mark, Action

    o North cardinal heading north
    o West Cardinal heading 135.
    o Safe water mark
    o Special mark in shape of a can
    o IALA A preferred channel to Stbd
    • Res Vis
    o Vessel Ahead me overtaking plus vessel port QTR no risk of collision
    o Vessel STBD Bow No risk of collision, Vessel Port bow Risk of collision and Vessel Stbd Qtr No risk of collision overtaking us.
