He shared a synoptic chart and asked about:
– What is this? (Occluded front)
– Weather expected?
– How to estimate wind speed?
– What is this number? (air pressure)
Preparations for RV?
He showed me a radar on screen and I replotted what it showed on a plotting sheet. He asked for
what the situation was and my action.
Lights and shapes (10x identification of the vessel – he only wanted identification of the lights, he
didn’t want sound signals, shapes or actions)
RoR (maybe 10x situations – he wanted me to identify the vessels by dayshapes, mainly FV or FV with
outlying gear) – he also stated that every situation is Risk of collision so no need for steady bearing
or any of that explanation.
Buoyage (just identify the buoy and action – he only asked for the light of the north cardinal buoy)
Note that a fair few of his buoys had me inside the danger area and with the lights as well had me
steaming towards vessels aground.
There is probably a few more things that I’ve forgotten but this is generally what he was asking. Also,
these questions recalled are in no particular order. His line of questioning had a good flow and each
question lead on from the last one. As an examiner he seemed very fair.
