Ship Type – Containers
Result – Pass
Started out with the usual pre-oral checks regarding ID, health and safety, looked around the room and was then told I was to be a chief officer on 500+ GT (Didn’t mention ship Type), so I assumed on Containers.
Questions are in a random order, but he pretty much went through the whole syllabus, and was happy once you gave the answer to move on.
1. My previous VSL experience, trading area, cargo carried, GT, DWT.
2. Joining 1st time as chief mate & 1st time company, where will you find your duties?
3. What duties will be in SMS?
4. What is Risk Assessment? How do you carry out RA? Why do we do RA?
5. Bosun is planning for maintenance of falls, what will you tell him?
6. Showed Load Line Zone chart on screen, Load port – Brazil (Tropical) to Discharge Port – Tanzania (Tropical), crossing summer and Winter zone (south of Cape town). What are your considerations while loading? Charter wants to load Max Cargo. What will you do and how? (Consumption, nil Ballast, Fuel Burner)

8. What is ISM (I started telling all what I knew) he stopped me at SMS
9. What will you get in SMS?
10. On Bridge watch in morning 0300 – Gyro Failure, Action
11. What equipment’s will get affected (Don’t tell General Emergency alarm)
12. What is Parametric Rolling? How will you know you’re experiencing Parametric Rolling? How will you avoid it?
13. Dry Dock – Preparations while sailing? Preparations before arrival? What information would you want to know before entering the Dock? In what condition will you depart the dock?
14. During Dry Dock, Hot work to be carried out close to the Bunker tank in 1 of the holds. How will you do it?
15. What Entries to make in the Garbage Record Book? What is Part 1 & Part 2?
16. Master is onboard but unavailable, 2 hrs to anchorage, there are other vessels at anchorage, how will you Anchor the Vessel? (Start with RA, Notice to ECR, Testing of Engines, Steering, etc)
ROR:
All the way I was PDV, ROC exists with all Vessel.
1. I am following TSS, another PDV is crossing TSS stbd to port, action.
2. I am following TSS, SV ahead of me following TSS, action (Overtaking).
3. Open Sea – Mine clearance on port Bow, action. (Where does it say you have to keep 1000m clearance?) (I had no idea where it says about 1000 metre, I just said RAM definition says Mine Clearance is RAM, even if it doesn’t show RAM lights,) That’s what he wanted to hear.
4. 3 targets on screen – Port bow (Trawler with Golf Flag – Hauling), Right ahead (Trawler with Papa Flag – Obstruction), Stbd Bow (FV with gear extended 150 metre), Describe about this targets & Action
Lights:
1. Towing vessel crossing port to stbd(tow length >200m),action.
2. RAM (Dredging/Underwater ops) underway and stopped or at anchor.
Buoyage: Inbound – Region A
Asked what does the arrow sign means? (Don’t tell inbound, he wants to hear General Direction of buoyage)
He wanted top marks, lights, rhythm & which side would I keep Buoy?
1. Isolated danger mark.
2. Preferred channel to port.
3. West cardinal, HDG – 180.
4. Port hand lateral mark.

He said end of the exam & asked me how about your exam. I just said I think I have met min MCA criteria. He said yes & you passed. Examiner was very calm, made me feel at ease and was guiding throughout, also rephrased questions when I asked him too. He was happy once a few keywords had been said and quickly moved to the next question & all the way he gave me feedback where I could not give full answer.
