KeymasterOral Exam Report
Name: Jake Martin
Exam: Chief Mate Unlimited/Master 3000 GT
Surveyor: Mamun Rahman (Colchester Office)
7/10/2022 @ 1130hrs
Online Oral Exam
Result: Pass
I joined the teams call and he asked to see my ID then went on to say that I’d
be answering questions as a Chief Mate unless he specifically stated that I
should answer as Master 3000 GT.
-Chief Mate on a bulk carrier loading iron ore, what safety precautions would
you take?
-What documents would you expect to have in hand relating to the cargo?
-Ballast pump stops working during cargo ops, what are your actions?
-WIAS alarm occurs, what is it and what could be the cause?
-Certificates and audits done relating to ISPS (Initial, annual, periodical,
renewal).
-How would you prepare for annual ISPS audit as SSO? What would the audit
involve?
-Who would be responsible for conducting the audit? (I talked about ACS, EAS
and he asked who would be responsible if the vessel wasn’t in either of these
schemes)
-What are the functional requirements of Safety Management System?
-Master 3000GT, come onto bridge and 2/O has had collision with fishing boat,
actions?
-You discover there’s a hole in the hull above the waterline, what are your
actions?
-What certificates are affected in the event of a collision?
-Vessel arrives in port of refuge, what are your first actions as Master?
-On passage going past Cape of Good Hope, weather precautions? (Wanted
strong currents and name of current)
RoR
-Open sea PDV crossing from port side, rule numbers and actions?
-Open sea PDV crossing from stbd side, rule numbers and actions? Can you
alter to port?
-Own vsl in TSS, fishing vsl crossing. Who is giveaway?
-After mentioning Rule 8f in the previous question he asked me to talk about
all 3 parts of that rule.
Lights
-Lights: Fishing vessel, stbd aspect UW+MW
-Fishing vessel UW+Stopped/at anchor
-Vsl aground >50m
Buoyage
-Identify South Cardinal Mark, which side to pass if heading 090deg
-5 yellow flashes every 20s seen mid ocean, what is it?
The exam was finished by 1225hrs and he said it wasn’t the best display of
knowledge from me (I agreed as my answers at the start of the exam in
particular were all over the place) but to my surprise he said he was going to
pass me! It goes to show you don’t need to have the perfect exam with some
surveyors to pass (but it probably helps). As an examiner Capt. Mamun was
quite hard to read when it came to understanding if he was satisfied with my
answer or not. However I felt the questions he asked were very fair and he was
happy to give me a moment to compose myself if my mind went blank whilst
answering a question which was greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much to all the guys at GMA and Whitehorse Maritime for their
guidance and help over the past 6 weeks! Best of luck to all going for orals
soon. -
