Checked the room and the deck.Started with asking my introduction and my past vessel and sailing experience. Last vessel type and trading area. He said since you are here for unlimited i can ask you for any type of vessel and since you have been sailing on tankers so will not be asking tanker work but for other types of ships.
He started by saying all questions will be based on you as a chief officer untill he specifies other wise.
1. Newly promoted chief officer, taking over the vessel. Bulk carrier loading in indonesia discharing in china(he didnt wanted to hear all the company breifing stuff so he asked me to skip directly to the part when i am onboard the vesse) basically he want to hear safety and security familiarisation. After hearing this he asked me to skips directly to the information i will ask from out going chief officer.
2. Loading grain cargo. Certificates required for that (doa, imsbc, grain loading manual). Preparation for loading grain cargo. Stability criteria. Can you load without doa.
3. Cargo loading finished. Check related to cargo before departure.
4. Actions if the ship and shore cargo figures dont match.
4a. What is BOL?
5. Departure preps. In the month of september. What information will you share with 2/o for the passage planning. (he wanted to hear changes in loadline zones during this month).
6. Vessel departed. Expecting heavy weather. Heavy weather prepartions. Can you send anybody on deck? What if it is of urgent matter and you have permission from captain what precaution ans preparation you will do for sending the person on fore castle in heavy weather. (safety line, safety harness, life vest)
6. What weather can you expect in south china sea during september.
7. Heavy weather passed. You have steeting failure. Actions? (no SPARRC he asked me to skip all the procedure he just wanted to hear emergency steering)
8. Will you raise NUC signal if you are steering using emergency steering system?
9. Now vessel aground. Actions as a chief mates? (he didnt want to hear all the procedure. First action do damage assessment and initiate damage control plan)
10. Since i had mentioned ERS. So he asked me what is ERS and what is thier role?
11. Now from Aground position vessel need to go to dry dock. What information you will share with dry dock? (emphasis on cargo on board so additional blocks) Preparations for emergency dry dock? (wanted to hear lock up cargo) How will you enter in dry dock? What is critital perioad and critical instant?
12. Life boat tests and frequencies.?
13. Explain in detail lifeboat quarterly inspection.
14. Since you are incharge of lsa ffa and 3rd officer is assisting you. How will you ensure that lsa ffa checks and maintenance are done as per sms?
Now he said further questions will be on basis you being a master on a vessel less than 3000 gt.
1. Mlc rest hours.
2. Mlc certificates. Procedure for mlc certification. What is dmlc 1 and dmlc 2
3. Difference between psc inspection and flag state inspection.
4. Fire in galley. Cook seriously injured. Actions? (again he didnt wanted the whole procedure. Just the helicopter medevac situation.) from where will you get medevac information, which publications to be reffered? (take radio medical advice and refer masters medical guide, hlac, iamsar vol 3)Whom to contact? (he wanted to hear pandi)
5. What things you will send wiith the chief cook? What informations will you share with the medevac team?
5. Now chief cook gone. Actions? (he wanted to hear about safe manning document and mlc amendment where certified cook is required for 10 and over crew)
6. Gmdss sea areas.
7. You are in sea area A3. Recieved distress alert on vhf dsc. Actions? Will you accept the distress alert?
8. Showed me the photo of magnetic compass and asked to identy various parts of the compass.
After this he finished the general topics and he said if i want a comfort break or drink water because once ror starts there is no stopping in between. Only Your first answer will be considered.
1. Bouys identification, top marks and light. One card for each types of bouy (port lateral hand mark, stbd lateral hand mark. Safe water mark, prefered channel to port, iso danger mark, special mark and wreck mark, nortb cardinal mark)
2. When is special wreck mark used.
3. What iz isophase and occulting
4. Vsl heading 090. You see north cardinal mark right ahead action?
5. Vsl head 180, you see west cardinal mark action?
6. Lights. Just identification, day signal and fog signal. One white light (he wanted to hear all 7 possibilities), towing ram seem from port, nuc making, aground less than 100m, fishing vessel with extended gear, cbd seen from port, sailing vsl, pilot vessel.
7. Radar plotting. Commence plot, continue plot and finish plot. How many observations minimum?
8. Action in restricted visibility. One vessel on port bow. Action? One vsl on stbd bow and other on stbd quarter. Action? One vsl on port bow and one on stbd bow. Action?
9. What will you do when you hear a fog signal fwd of your beam? (wanted to hear rule 19e)
After this he told me congratulations you have passed.
Comments: good surveyor. Keeps pushing you and keeps on giving hints until he gets what he wants to hear. Wants direct answers and not the whole background routine stuff.
Took his permission before hand if i can use paper to write notes for better answering and he agreed. -
