    55 mins

Very pleasant guy. Put me at ease from the start. Had a couple mins of small talk about and running through the new recording procedures. He stopped me when he was happy on most of my answers so we ended up flying through the exam pretty quickly.

For the purpose of this exam you will be the captain at all times and should act accordingly.

Ok, you are on a Bulk Carrier and you will be joining and the sailing from Antwerp to Singapore.

What type specific certificates would you find on board?

What statutory certificates would you find?
What validity? (For SMC, CSSRC, CSSEC, ISSC, MLC)

What insurances will a bulk carrier have?

Your vessel is ACS. What does that mean?

    What is an RO?

What certs under ACS can an RO issue?

What’s the difference between ACS and EAS?

You’re going to prepare for an MLC survey. What will you prepare?

What information is on DMLC Part 1 and Part 2?

    What is in an SEA?

How would you check the cargo?

The mate comes to you and says the cargo quantity is different to what you have loaded. What are you going to do?

    Would you sign the BOL?

Ok you’re sailing. The steering becomes sluggish, actions?

    Ok, you ground. Initial actions?
    Follow on actions?
    Certificates effected?
Sailing to dry dock. What will you prepare? How would conduct the HOD meeting?

In dry dock, what do you expect the dock to provide you?

What will you check before re-floating?

You’re going to have a loadline survey leading to a renewal of LL certificate. How will you prepare for this?

    Ok, you’re sailing again.

You have an engine room fire. Talk to me about your follow on procedures.

2 people were injured during the fire. How will you get them off? What other considerations do you have?

Talk to me about how you would review the SMS/PTW’s?

What documents do you need to send the injured crew ashore with?

2 new joiners. 1 is a polish 2nd officer, what documents do you require?

You have 2 cadets joining, both 16. What do you have to do?

Right, lets move onto some ROR and Buoyage. (At this point he shared his screen with me)

For each Buoy I show you, I want the light, top mark and which way you will go.

    Special Mark

    Isolated danger mark

    Emergency wreck marker

    Heading 180 West cardinal

    Heading 090 east cardinal

Ok, for all the following vessels risk of collision exists. I want you to identify the following before telling me your actions:
    Type,
    Length,
    Aspect,
    Day shape,
    Fog Signal

Then he showed me the following.
In Tss – Fishing vessel stbd side

Tugboat less than 50m, RAM, length of tow over 200m. fog signal for tug and towed vessel if manned

    NUC right ahead

Ok, youre on this vessel (CBD) and risk of collision with this vessel (NUC) on your port side. What will you do?

What lights would she show if she was aground? Then what would your actions be? What would her fog signal change to?

Then he asked me 1 rule 19 question. Its not even worth drawing. Vessel on port should. Risk of collision exists. I quoted rule 19 and he stopped me.

He then said that’s the end of the exam. It ended so quickly that it was a little jarring. I was really confident that it had gone well until he ended it so soon.

He said ‘You have passed today Mr Churchley’. Asked me if I had any questions and also asked me what I will be doing for the rest of my day. He said I did really well, congratulated me and that I would receive the official result email in the next 24 hours.
