    1ST ATTEMPT

    DURATION – 1130 – 1300 LT
    RESULT: PASS
    Started with General introduction and rules to be followed during the exam.
    Asked about my last vessel type, trading areas, cargo worked with. Had teams app issue for a min but was resolved quickly.
    1. How is ISM implemented on your last vessel? (Wanted to hear only two words – Through SMS)
    2. Talk me through the certificates and certification process under ISM.
    3. Under ISPS code, what do you understand by DOS.
    4. Content of DOS and When do you exchange a DOS.
    5. What do you understand by MLC?
    6. Certificate and certification process under MLC
    7. Hours of rest for a young person
    8. Role of Safety Officer onboard and who was safety officer in your last vessel.
    9. What am I looking for during my safety inspection rounds?
    Asked about my DD experience, I responded with no experience on DD hence he put me on DD.
    10. Dangerous Space Work is about be carried out in DD. As a Chief how will you ensure that the job is being carried out in safe manner. (Told me that he is expecting a comprehensive answer and said I can make notes before speaking as I have not done DD and I need structure my answer)
    11. Explain about P Force
    12. Explain about permit to work system.
    13. What do you understand by the term Risk Assessment. (Expects a complete understanding)
    14. Explain Angle List and Angle of Loll
    15. How do you correct both List and Loll (stopped when I said my concern / priority is to bring G down for Loll case then bring into centreline)?
    16. Intact Stability Criteria for a Tanker (mentioned MSIS 43)
    17. GZ Curve (indicate Vanishing Stability)
    18. How did my last vessel comply with MARPOL Annex 1?
    19. Can you run OWS in Special Area? What happens when 15ppm criteria exceeds (This question came up because I mentioned OWS in previous question / Talked about my company requirements on running OWS in Special Area as well since it was more stringent than marpol req.)
    20. How did my last vessel comply with MARPOL Annex 5? What is in the placard?
    21. SEQ Survey going on – How do you prove to surveyor that your Emergency Fire pump is serving its purpose?
    22. How do you prove that your Fire Isolation valve is serving its purpose?
    23. Lifeboat 5 yearly Load test preparations only NOT PROCEDURE. (Mentioned MGN 560)
    24. What does SOLAS say about Lifeboat inspections. (SOLAS CH III REG 20)
    25. Cargo operation (Loading) about to start. What will I tell my 3rd Officer. (AGAIN, HE SAID HE WANTED COMPREHENSIVE ANSWER AND ASKED ME TO WRITE DOWN BEFORE I COULD SPEAK)
    26. You are in cabin and 3rd officer calls you that there is an oil spill. What do you expect your 3rd Officer to do before you come down to CCR.
    27. You are in CCR now, what are you going to do about it. (Asked for area of Spill – he said Manifold)
    28. Asked what type of anchor I had my last vessel and how many shackles it had? This question was a prep. for next question.
    29. Put me on VLCC. Asked to explain anchoring procedures on a VLCC. (Did not want- checking depth, seabed etc stories. He said he wanted to know what I’m going to as Ch. Off with my crew)
    30. You are in Anchorage now about to drop anchor. Depth is about 50m. What are you going to do? (I said I will walk back, and he cut me of saying that’s the only word he wanted to hear. Not anything else and said walk back is always the safest thing to do)
    31. You have dropped 5 shackles in water. How do u know that’s the 5th shackle. Asked to draw and show.

    4. RAM (DREDGER) > 50 M, Right Ahead. Safe to pass on port and Obstruction on STBD.
    5. Trawler underway and making way <50m, shooting nets and Alphabetical Flag for it.
    6. FV underway and making with gear extending 150m
    7. Vessel AGROUND >100 m (Asked for Fog Signal only)
    COLREGS SITUATIONS: (ALL WITHIN THE SCOPE OF ESAILOR)
    1. Own vessel PDV, RAM on portside.
    2. Own Vessel PDV, CBD on portside. (He asked if my actions will be same as I went to port on the previous situation / Said no it won’t be same. CBD is a PDV. I won’t go to Port for a PDV on my port)
    3. Own Vessel CBD, RAM on portside.

    Fair Examiner. Gives you time to think and make notes before answering. Expects a Practical approach and through knowledge on conventions / certifications / surveys. The questions which he asked to write before speaking where he mentioned that he wanted a proper management style of answer.
