    10/12/2008 GREENOCK PASS

He started off with a general chat about the type of ships i was on and asked me to pick one and that we would go through the syllabus contained in M notice 69 tailored to that vessel

I picked an oil tanker with a MAN B&W MC Engine.

As an aside he asked me if I thought that the people on board the tanker were qualified to work on the steam plants. and he went on to explain that BP after an audit realised that in fact the people were NOT qualified and ended up with Large numbers of people from BP having to get steam endorsements.

1 He started by asking me to talk him through the Lub Oil System starting at the
crankcase drains going round the system
2 He asked about desirable quality’s of Lubricating oils and asked for
comparisons of Lub oil between 2 and 4 strokes
3 Boiler safety devices, Asking where located and the type of safety valve fitted
    (looking for high lift)
4 Boiler Water treatment – what system we had (Unitor) what are we trying to
achieve by treating boiler water. what is a non chemical way of preventing
    corrosion ( boiler Hotwell Temp)
5 How To disconnect a Motor that needs opening for survey general questions
    on safe electrical practices
6 Shore Power – would it be ok to connect up to shore power if they could only
    provide 400v at 50Hz
7 Stability – was asking what happens to the centre of gravity if he was to place
a massive weight on the bow of the ship
Ships Stability/Stress measuring equipment did we as engineers have anything to do with it (went on to explain we should but has been finding that lots of people have said they didnt in their company)
Dry dock planning – Told me it was 4 weeks before a drydock what would i do to start preparing for a drydock. spent a good bit of time on this one
8 Hull Paint looking to see if i was aware of the regulations and certificates
    involved with hull paint systems
9 Certificates onboard (he was looking for the important ones such as Load Line
    Cert etc)
10 ISM – what is it how is it organised and administered ie IMO leading to
Statutory notices going to Dept transport then on to MCA Agency. asked about

I told him since I did not appear for my Academics my electrical was not so good. He told me not to mention Brand names , manufacturer names whenever asked about the type of machine and or chemicals and lubricating oil.( I somehow figured it out and avoided telling any brand names as such)

How does the bridge controls control the main engine?
How does the telegraph control system control the engine speed?
Can they simply speed up to full speed anytime they wish?
As an engineer, do you have any control over what they do? (I had mention taking ECR control in emergencies, but normally, via good communications)
Does the main engine run at full load at all times? Can the bridge go to 100%?

He started off by asking what type of ships I’d worked on (Dive support, supply, standby), then said we’d be concentrating on big-ship stuff.

Piston overhaul, describe the procedure. I started talking about spares and he wanted to know what spares must be carried onboard. Talked about work permits, risk assessments. Lifting equipment and the certification of it (who issues it). Checks on piston, and ring clearances.

What certificates are onboard? I did poorly here, he was after quite a few.

ISM – what is it, how does it affect engineers, what is a N.C. and a few other abbreviations.

Bottom end bolts – why some have a finite life and some an infinite life.

Boiler safety valve – compare it to an air receiver relief valve, what are the differences? How much should the valve lift? Draw and describe the operation of the safety valve.

Turbochargers – Explain pulse & constant pressure turbocharging. What is surging & causes & effects?

Main engine starts and runs erratically, what could be the fault? Was looking for water in the fuel.

Electric motor – what causes degradation of the insulation? How to test I.R. and what the I.R. value should be over (was looking for a specific figure here).

I think that was all, during the exam i said ‘I think’ a few times, and it turns out he doesnt want to hear those words. If you don’t know it, dont say it.

    Greenock 3rd April 2012 15.15 1hr 35mins PASS

*start by writing down all the certificates required by law on all international going ships.

    * starting from the top of the list explain each certificate.

*on each certificate he wanted to know why they were on board, what equipment they each covered (as well as each document), how it can be proved the ship was complying to them (he said a certificate is only a piece of paper)

    * IOPP, IAPP, ISPS, LOADLINE

    * What is ISPS, what do they check when they come onboard (what about on the bridge)

    * What are the hours of rest, how can you prove that your crew is complying

    * Loadline survey what do you as second engineer need to check before the survey, what about the documents?

    * Stability – what is it, draw. what happens when double bottom gets hole in it? what happens to G? does B move?

    * OK hole in double bottom needs dry dock, what does the dock need to know? docking plans, work scope, supplies required and shore connection

    * what do u ask for the shore connection? was looking for 3-phase AC 440V 60 Hz and the required load

    * Drydock says they can give you 380V 50Hz and 200kW less than you requested do you accept? He was looking for Yes but with the realisation that it will endanger the ship to the heightened possibility of fire due to overheating motors and failed insulations

    * Write down power equation for 3-phase AC

    * Draw differences in AC and DC waveform

    * What happens to resistance when insulation is heated

    * How is frequency controlled – said generator speed – he asked for another method – i said frequency converter

    * How does a frequency converter function?

    * Back to docking – what do you check on the hull

    * What do you mean check the propeller – i said for cavitation

*what is cavitation? where would you find this?

    * Rudder check, what are you looking at

    * You’ve opened the drain and there is water how o you find the leak – I said by water test when rudder is removed

    * is there a safer way to do it? – i said applying air and using soapy liquid to check for leaks – he was looking for this

    * what pressure?

    * Pick an engine type (4-stroke or 2-stroke) to test power in a cylinder – i said 2-stroke

    * how do you check cylinder performance

*sketch power card and explain significant points

    * sketch draw card and explain

    * what happens when you have late injection

    * what happens when you have low peak pressure and low exhaust temperatures

    * What is the formula for indicated power

    * What is the formula for effective power (i had mentioned effective power)

    * Wanted to know all certificates validation periods and how they are linked throughout the company from the source to the application onboard

    * What type of repair would you do in the dry dock to the hole in the double bottom – i said have it cut out and replated

    * Would you not accept a doubler? – said no because the frames may be damaged and that would apply extra stress on the hull – he wanted to hear this
