On Passenger ship for most of the exam

• Your company have promoted you to master what would you expect from the company
• You’ve now joined your vessel, you’ve met the outgoing master, how would you take over and what would you expect to happen.
• You’ve mentioned all the certificates but what sort of plans would you also takeover.
• What is the inspection schedule of an MLC certificate
• What other documents would you expect to come along with the MLC certificate
• So, if you walked on board today, took over and saw the MLC certificate was expired last month what would you do?
• Are casino, shop, security staff on board considers seafarers.
• What’s the Masters responsibilities on board with regard to MLC
• You mentioned form P earlier, what’s the contents of Form P
• What’s in section 2 of the Official logbook
• Who signs the official logbook, how long is it valid for?
• Where do you send the official logbook?
• What are the various sections of the official logbook?
• If passenger vessels have PSSC certificate what do cargo ships have?

• If there was a passenger requiring to be airlifted. You walk up to the bridge, what would be your actions/what should happen
• How would the helicopter approach?
• How would you know where the helicopter could land or how would you know what the helicopter is going to do?
• Okay so the helicopter is now ahead of the vessel, suddenly without communication it ditches. What is your action as master?
• What communication would you make?
• Okay so with a passenger ship, as master, how would you prepare for heavy weather?
• What would your concerns be with the sea state, swell?
• Tell me about Parametric and Synchronous rolling.
• Tell me regarding stability what your thoughts would be regarding heavy weather?
• What would be your concerns with high winds on a passenger vessel?
• Okay so now you’re coming into port on a cargo vessel, and you’ve planned to go alongside. The pilot comes on board and tells you, no you’re going to anchor instead due to the weather. Is that okay for you or what would be your actions.
• Where can you get forecasts from?
• Okay so you’ve made the commitment you’re going to anchor. In the afternoon the weather picks up. You’re in your cabin and the second mate calls you and tells you you’re dragging anchor.
• Okay so you’ve picked up the anchor and now the pilot is back on board. Weather has improved and you can now head into the port. When you’re in the channel for whatever reason you find yourself aground.
• What other than water ingress would you be worried about if there was an opening in the hull (pollution)
• What certificates would you expect to be affected?
Buoyage / RoR
• Preferred channel to starboard, IALA B, outbound, Main channel, action, lights?
• Special mark, top mark, light, uses.

• lights – Mine clearance vessel dead ahead. Day shape, sound signal, passing distance. Examiner asked if I would be happy crossing ahead of it and I said I would personally have checked navtex and planned to be far away from the vessel. Which the examiner seemed pleased with

Started with only one blip and asked if it’s enough info. Usual commence systematic plot and then asked to describe the situation and what rules apply. Diagram might not be so clear, but it was overtaking. The W was never added so used my own vector to complete.

That’s when I was informed that it was the end of the exam and that I had passed. Questions fell nicely for me on the day, and I wish I could remember the name of the examiner. Very fair though and there will be some questions that I missed. -
