Date : 01-Dec-2021
Started my exam at 0900hrs and finished at about 1030 including introduction and formalities after the exam.
1. Last ship details, including trading areas and cargo.
2. Taking over as a master.
3. Certificates.
4. SAFCON certificate contents and survey.
5. GPS failure.
6. Magnetic compass swinging and correction including all the co efficients.
7. Passage planning as master.
8. Loading iron ore – precautions and what advise will you give the chief officer.
9. Checking the passage plan the 2nd mate has prepared.
10. Grounding.
11. Salvage and towage.
12. Water ingress alarm on my last ship – Actions.
13. Port state control – Everything including inspections and risk profiling.
14. Expanded inspection.
15. ISM-SMS
16. Fire in paint locker.

1. PDV stb’d bow.
2. PDV port bow.
3. Fishing vsl port bow.
4. Trawling vsl port bow.
5. VSL aground right ahead.
6. Sailing vsl on prt side.
7. Sailing vsl overtaking.
8. PDV in TSS stb’d side.
9. PDV in TSS port side.
10. North Cardinal buoy.
11. South cardinal buoy.
12. Lateral marks region A and B.
13. East and West cardinal – Pass in between.
That’s all I can remember, there were not many questions but got four emergencies and the answers were mainly discussion that’s why took a long time. Capt Legget is one of the best surveyors you can get, very helpful, points you in the right direction.
