OOW <3000GT EXAM,
1st Attempt, Pass with Capt. Andrews
I joined 15 minutes before the exam. The Examiner joined almost 10 minutes before
also. Of course, we went through the MCA Code of conduct, with room check and
passport. He already had a look at my Sea-time, and luckily he put me on a similar
vessel throughout the exam, so I was very grateful for that. Here we go :
PART I
• Passage plan was the lead of the whole exam. He stopped me to jump onto other
topics while I was going through it. We covered:
• What’s the content of Sailing direction, Wx routing Chart, ALRS Vol.1 ?
• LY3 ? Explain.
• How can you update your charts, How do you know what charts you require for
your passage.
• Drilled me a bit on NTM, what do you find in the cumulative notices ? What’s MGN
? Who publishes them ?
• Showed me many charts symbols (Seabed terms, Compass rose (explain), pilot
station, reporting station, submarine cables, tidal diamonds). Extract me the
Informations for “such” Diamond, HW – 1. What does that mean ? Difference
between neap and spring ? Where else can you find these informations “other than
on paper charts” ?
• What are the methods of position fixing
• Synoptic chart, explain. He pointed out positions, what type of weather would you
find ? Explain warm front, cold front, occluded)
• What are the different Met sources available ? Explain Navtex ?
• Showed me a picture of a P.A.B, Steveson screen, How to predict Fog ?
• ISM, explain, Content ?
• MLC, explain, Content ? SEA content ?
• Bridge Watch
• Someone report to you, seafarer just fail over board, action ?
• Compass errors, various methods for checking ?
• Radar Set up, what are the inputs, showed me a display (with wrong scale, sea
cluttered with high traffic density) in Narrow channel, what does that tell ? Action ?
• Differences between Sea stabilised and Ground stabilised ?
• Explain Parallel indexing and what can you do with it ?
• Emergency Procedure : Bunkering, Overflow in Spain. Action ?
• SOPEP content ? (Don’t forget “local contact”)
• Annexe 5, MARPOL
• Pre departure procedure. Explain Emergency Steering.
• COSWP, content
• Smoke in Accomodation, you see it yourself. Action ?
• mooring operation ?
• What IAMSAR ?
PART II
R.O.R : Animated collision situation, mixed with some lights and shape. Can’t
remember exactly but It was pretty straight forward. This is my Highlight though, I got
it right but I took my time on it :
Rule 19 : Fully. He gave me a radar plot, with own ship’s
vector, find where to put W.
Buoyage : one by one, give me (lights, top mark, which
side do you go inbound ?
Conclusion
Capt. Andrews was really fair, he’d let me have second thoughts when the answers
where not clear enough. Sometimes, he’d give me some guidance to get what he
was after. I think the key point of the exam was that, I was confident with my
answers (even thought sometimes I had doubts) and every time he’d stop me half
way through the answer and say “OK, perfect, thanks. Next…” so I never had to
explain a full procedure.
