Captain Kaiser Ali
Passenger Ships
Pass
Initially joined meeting via email link 15 mins, only original link worked, not reminder email.
Examiner joined at 14:20, explained the exam, code of conduct and explained the option to record- I
chose to record. He explained he will not push me for answers so when I stop my answer, he
assumes I have finished. Also, if I don’t understand a question I should ask for clarification before I
start answering.
He then asked me about the last couple of years of my experience, as I started to explain he said my
audio was very bad. He had explained that if the audio was bad, he might have to cancel the exam.
He let me leave and re-join the meeting- this time I joined via the Teams app I had not seen this
option before. This time the audio worked fine- in short: use the teams app link, not the email!
Assume on a passenger vessel similar to last unless otherwise specified.

You’re in dry dock, on last ship with Safety officer and Security officer, how will you manage safe
work in dangerous areas of the vessel? Used my experience in my answer which he said at the end
he liked. Daily meetings, gave specific tasks for SO/SSO, PTW, R.A, inspecting area before work.
Explained bridging document, agreed communication with shipyard & contractors, issues with
language barriers, mixed experience of contractors and emergency procedures.
How would you define a dangerous area, what would you consider? Spoke about areas not usually
occupied for work, limited access, and atmosphere- but stressed not just areas such as tanks etcareas
considered would also be radar mast/scaffolding etc.
Voyage Plan
Left dry dock, 72 hours before departing Singapore – Hong Kong to embark Pax – Japan, this time
of year, how will you plan the voyage? Seaworthiness, risk assessment, HOD meeting. Went
through C/E, 2nd off Passage plan, C/O, Medical team. I would also look at security, agent, comms,
pilot times, environmental regs, Weather routing- specifically TRS Typhoon awareness- as this is
something I have previously experienced in Japan. Work Schedules, hours of rest and manning on
bridge with someone on call as can be high traffic density areas from experience. I would adjust my
standing/night orders for these considerations. Dynamic R.A during voyage.
He prompted speaking to head cook which I forgot but don’t think he was looking for anything
specific.
There are depressions building/ possibility of TRS in area, how would you manage?
Spoke about alternative routes, R.A, Heavy weather checklist, meeting, brief bridge team on signs of
TRS.

3 preferred channel markers, mix of regions, identify.
Emergency wreck buoy, when would you see this? Action if ahead?
Heading 180, West Cardinal Mark on PS, East Cardinal Mark on SB, Action?

action & which side you leave each mark on.

Spoke about RA, briefing with teams, pilot communication and comms with tugs, agreed comms

Spoke about danger of tug work, girting, handling tug line on shoulder.
He asked if I knew why he asked that question- of course referenced the tragic incident on the Clyde
a couple of weeks ago.
Then told me I passed. Quick chat about importance of continuous learning as Master. It was a fair
exam and thorough, did feel quite long- was exactly 2 hours.
I would not have been so well prepared if it wasn’t for support from GMA, Whitehorse clinics,
friends grilling me with questions and students writing up previous oral exams. Thank you to all!! -
