On bridge and straight on ECDIS
How do you know your plotter is ECDIS
Raster chart how do you recognise it
Unidentified symbol, what does ECDIS show
Steering: how does your steering know where it is?
Maintaining a navigational watch.. how?
he kept asking until he gets everything..
Now restricted visibility.. what additional actions u will take.
Fire panel shows active on 5 decks bellow…
how long before the alarm goes off
He didn’t care if it was accommodation or cargo or engine room.
Insisted on what actions taken before Masters arrival.
Besides Mustering crew, preparing fire teams, class of fire, he kept asking until I said I will alter
course to go downwind and that I will transmit a distress only under Masters authority.
Also I send someone to investigate – what instructions do I give him
He wanted to make clear I will not put anyone in harms way.

Taking over a night watch and you see on a heads up radar land ahead. (About to
crash)Coastal navigation – narrow channel..
What do you ask the officer handing u over..
I had no answer for this ( I guess I should’ve asked if he was sleeping!)
8.Restricted Visibility – Radar plot:
on a heading of 325 u see a target just abaft your port beam.
Actions and why? wanted a specific heading for a/c
Actions by other vessel
Chartwork:
I) compass rose: variation 3*10’W 2010(10’E) what is the variation now.
ii) symbology: obstruction 19m dotted circle around it with a line overhead. He insisted
until he heard LAT
TSS:
I)which vessels can use inshore zone
ii) FV crossing from Portside – actions and why
could go port but went STBD, he asked why.. to avoid potential gear behind her
iii) SV crossing from stbd – actions and why
explained SV should not impede my safe passage but I would still take action. He wanted
to hear that rule 18 should still be considered
He wanted to hear rule 8f iii, (vessel not to be impeded is not releaved from taking action
to avoid collision) he was happy I took action for both.. surprised why I didn’t call the
master :O, though I mentioned to inform the VTS if crossing inshore zone
Open water:
I) crossing situation PDV to PDV
actions and why..
even though I went STBD
he insisted again why I did not go to PORT and if there any part of the rules that says I
can’t go to Port.
I explained avoid crossing his bow.. and taking action which will give best and faster result.
Again he wanted to make clear that I can go to port!
ii)Vessel NUC on my port bow – no risk of collision – actions to take
I casually said I will maintain course and speed..
he asked why, what does rule 18 says..
so I changed my answer to STBD as he wanted to wanted to hear TAKE action to
KEEP CLEAR
