3. Chart Symbols. Contour lines, Different colour patterns of water what does they indicate, Compass
Rose- How much is the variation.
4. Why do we need variation? Why do we need to calculate magnetic compass error?
5. ECDIS setup. Checks on ECDIS.
6. Talk me through how will you plot a great circle track on ECDIS.
7. Where will you find navigation formula onboard?
8. What is mercator sailing? How we do it?
9. What is sextant used for?
10. What is the purpose of taking altitude of a celestial boday?
11. What other publication do you use for celestial navigation other than Nautical Almanac.

22. Where will you find the penalty for breaching the SOX emission limit?
23. What is SMS? How to you use it practically onboard?

31. Loading DG cargo. Crane fails. Spillage. Action.
32. Some of the crew got contaminated with DG cargo due to spillage. What will you do to rescue and
treat them?
33. What rules apply in Restricted visibility?
34. Radar Setup.
35. Setup for collision avoidance. And what if speed log fails?
36. How can you find the accuracy of GPS?
Buoyage – (Identify, Colour, Shape, Topmark, Light, Rhythm… And action for only one)
1. IALA Region A STBD hand lateral mark- When outbound on which side will you pass.(Action only for
this).
2. IALA B Preferred channel to STBD.
3. Isolated Danger Mark.
4. IALA A Preferred channel to STBD.
ROR-Lights (Identify, Length, What’s she doing, Day shape, Fog Signal, Action)
1. Towing Ram, Length of tow>200mtrs. Action
2. PDV STBD aspect. Action. Can you go to port. Which rule says you cannot go to port?
3. CBD probably>50mtrs STBD aspect. Action. Why early alteration to STBD as risk of collision still
doesn’t exists?
4. Pilot vsl seen from STBD aspect. Action.
Situations-
TSS – Own vsl (PDV) crossing the TSS. ROC with fishing vessel following the traffic lane. Action. Why?
What does Rule 10 says about FV?
Restricted visibility-
1. Given 1 plot for a target on Port side fwd of the beam. Own ship HDG-000. Action. (A. Commence
systematic plotting)
2. Given all 3 plots now. Radar on RM display. Does ROC exists?
3. Okay what action will you take??.. (I will complete the plot.. What’s my speed?)
4. Okay speed is 2 range rings. Action. Why?
5. Okay so how many degrees should you alter? (I said it should be bold enough to be readily
apparent to another vessel. I didn’t gave any number yet.)
6. Give me a number. I want to know what that bold alteration is? (I did a rough plot and estimated
that the aspect will entirely change at around 80 degree (approximately) and the relative approach
(OA which was coming towards the center) will reverse ( O’A will go away from the center).
So I said I would alter by 80 degrees to STBD.
Feedback-
You were quite on track with the distress relay procedures. But you need to go through the proper
distress relay procedure.
You met the requirements and it’s a pass.
This is only that I can remember.. -
