KeymasterOrals Report – March 2025
Master Unlimited (Pass)
Examiner : Khairul Anam.
Time: 1hr
Mr. Anam was online 10 mins prior, as soon as I logged in 10 mins as instructed he was
on just a few seconds later (probably my first test! Time keeping). He then asked where I
was taking the exam and what vessels I was on. Then proceeded to tell me for this exam
I will be the master of the last pax ship I was on. Talked through recording process and
the exam started.
1. Your passenger vessel has to transit through a high risk area. Action as a master.
• Meeting with firstly second oRicer to look at the passage plan. Discussed
using q6099, BMP5, UKMTO reporting, Maritime security Horn of Africa,
Passing as far as possible from the area etc.
• Chief oRicer : discuss rest hours for extra look out purposes, planning
works so no deck work in progress during transit time etc.
• Chief Engineer, best speed available, bunkers required, (as I would like to
transit as fast as possible.
• Crew- drills, discuss vigilance, SSAS, and identify a citadel in case we get
under attack etc.
2. Safety and security which one is important? I asked him Context? He said with
your guests, what is more important their safety or their security. Told him their
life so whichever will jeopardise their life.
3. You get a distress, must you go and where do you get this guidance?
Said yes, as per Solas chapter V which is ratified in UK law that I should proceed
at to assist.
4. When can you not follow this law?
If will jeopardise the safety of my my crew, guests and ship. ( what else? He
asked, and I said if its too far to be practical for me ) He was happy with that.
5. What gives you the power to make such a decision? Master’s overriding authority.
6. Back to your distress, what do you know about UK and SAR? I was so confused
by this question but just talked about the SAR plans pax vessels must have as
per MCA. He said good and we moved on.
7. Have you heard about the recent accident between the container vessel and the
tanker? I said yes but not dwelling on it much as I am honestly just waiting to
read the MAIB report.
8. Will MAIB blame the container? I said no, and outlined the purpose of MAIB.
9. Where do you find this information you say? Told him MGN 564. And its under the
uk law MS accident and investigation ) he said good.
10. Now let’s say poor watch keeping was an issue, where do you find the guidance
on this? Told him MGN 315 and explained.
11. Lets say the OOW did not call the master on time to avert crisis, where will you
out line when to be called. Why do you think they may have called the master
late? Standing orders, then just talked about Bridge resource management
(relationship with the crew) I did a lot of talking and he didn’t stop me just kept
nodding till I finished.
12. Now you mean to say they didn’t understand the master standing orders? What
could be the reason or how would you make it better? I’d make them clear,
concise and comprehensible as per SMS.
13. What are your other duties under SMS and what certification is held regarding
the SMS. (The usual)
14. Periodical review? What is the time frame. I said frequently by filling a form in our
sms when any matter that requires review is brought to my attention.
15. Who will issue your SMC and ISM. (I was on a pax so said MCA)
16. I’ve seen some cargo ships having class give them this. Why ?
Talked about ACS and EAS
17. Where do you find this information? MGN 568 & 561 respectively.
18. What’s drills do you have onboard and under what guidance? Talked through
MGN 71.
19. Where don you get this guidance on which types of drill scenarios to have? Drill
matrix on our SMS
20. How do you go about crowd and crisis management on board and how do you
ensure the crew are up to date with their training? (answered about our drill
procedures, training talked of classing them from first time on board, new class
of ship, first time in the EP, etc..
21. How do you know that your passengers know its an emergency? Talked about
our passenger briefing and attendance site and announcement done by the
captain prior to departure plus sounding the general emergency signal.
22. Is this mandatory and why? Told him I read the SI on it but cannot remember the
name and accompanying MSN number, he said good you know it exists that’s
what I wanted.
23. Where do you record this? OLB
24. What is logged in your pax vessel OLB? (Usual answer plus part 2)
25. You mentioned WTD, tell me your understanding of damage stability on pax
vessels. (just talked through probabilistic, deterministic index A index R.
Subdivision etc.)
26. Tell me about Damage control plan and damage control booklet. The usual.
27. What is your understanding of permeability. (Standard SQA answer)
28. Which has more permeability oil tanker or cargo ship and why. (Talked about
type A and B)
29. Who maintains ballast records? C/O
30. Okay those are chief mate questions. Now you had damage, talk me through
your understanding of Salvage. ( just talked about no cure no pay, article 13, 14
and SCOPIC)
31. What does SCOPIC stand for?
32. What other insurance does P&I give and under what law and where will you find
it. (the usual MLC insurance, and its posted)
33. Back to your azipod propulsion and diesel engines. What would you look for
prior to bunkering and why? Bunker Delivery note, sulphur content. Talked
through Annex VI
34. So if you have 0.5% fuel you won’t go through ECA, SECA? Talked through our
scrubber system, open and close loop and MGO.
35. How will engineers know about ECA and Where would you record these? OLB
and talked through our notices given as per out SMS (environmental policy)
36. Have you ever been in any emergencies? I said yes, cabin fire. Oh interesting and
we moved on.
37. Showed me a 2020 synoptic chart. What are these red, blue and purple
symbols?
38. What are you monitoring keenly as a master as you head to the Caribbean. Low
pressure, TRS.
39. Showed me a magnetic compass image. Name the parts. Each part he asked for
the corrections.
40. What would you write about taking compass error on you standing orders. (Take
them every watch, or after staying course to long and made a bold alteration
because of retentive error.)
41. Talk me through retentive error. mention this error tends to decay with time plus
the usual including dry dock bring an example.)
BOUYAGE:
42. West cardinal buoy, 180 heading. Where would your 3rd mate on duty pass
COLREG:
43. Slide showing TSS crossing you are give way, he says ROC exists where will you
expect your 3rd mate go?
I said stbd. He asked to inshore? Yes, avoiding immediate danger as per rule 10.
44. You come on the bridge and you see this (shows a slide with fishing VL extending
gear over 150 m fine on my stbd and RAM Dead ahead. ) where will you expect
your 3rd oRicer to pass? I said port, because of the extending gear of over 150m
not certain how far it extends.)
Then he said I’ll stop here now, how did you think you did in the exam? I said I tried my
best. Then he said well you did more than try as you have passed the exam today.
Congratulations.
Then went through the regular procedures of applying for my COC. He is a very good,
and fair examiner. Will let you finish and moves on once he gets what he is looking for. -
