Keymaster13/05/2019 Examiner- Pateman Vessel type – RoPax Exam Time – 90 minutes
Result – Fail.
A very standard exam. Very clinical. Don’t expect any small talk. Pateman will give you some hints throughout the exam if you’re not hitting the nail on the head. He’s actually quite helpful. Beginning of the exam was good. ROR at the end of the exam = bloodbath.
Started off with a brief overview of how he would like the answers; you are the Chief Officer on your vessel and answers are to be structured accordingly.
• Tell me about your last vessel?
• What class is your vessel?
• LSA? As in lifeboats, liferafts, RB etc.
• Tell me some of the Conventions you know about. (check the shelf behind him if you get stuck with this one, they’re all there, spines staring right at you)
• Name some conventions? Which in particular apply to your vessel. He was after ISM.
• What certificates do you have for your vessel that are particularly relevant to your type of vessel?
• What determines if you can carry hazardous cargo?
• What is in in a Document of Compliance for DG’s?
• Describe to me some duties as Chief Officer (this question clearly led the way for the exam although I never mentioned training or certificates so beware)
• As Chief Officer, what certificates are you going to expect your crew to have?
• How are those certificates issued? What training is involved? Ref STCW for Pax Ships and Company Training Matrix.
• How are you going to make sure your crew stick to their hours of work?
• Draw me your vessels load line. No specific measurements necessary.
• Define B, G and M.
• What does C1 mean?
• How do you get FWA? How do you get DWA?
• Shear forces and bending moments? What ships suffer the most? Why and how?
• He pulled out a fire plan of a container ship and asked for my response to a fire alarm in the galley.
• Another fire alarm has gone off now what are you going to do?
• The captain arrives on the bridge and sends you down. What are your actions as fire team leader?
• You are captain of this vessel – (gives you a small container ship) talk me through everything you would be expecting to be done as you approach. Wind is from this direction 15 knots, tide is running in the opposite direction at 3 knots.
• Buoyage. Region A against the flow. No lights, no top marks. Just which side you would pass.
• Two PDV’s crossing.
• Tug and tow 2 points to port.
• Rule 17.
• Sailing Vessel.
• Who do these rules apply to? Rule 1: I messed up here. Out came the shotgun…. Define NUC, Define RAM. Define a Vessel.
• Feedback – Fail on ROR. Everything else was OK. -
