KeymasterChief engineer unlimited oral exam Phil Lewis – Very fair examiner.
• Have you sailed on two strokes.
• Start by explaining the difference between two strokes and four strokes. Contructional differences.
• What is the crosshead for?
• What is the crosshead made from and the shoes and slides.
• What is a cylinder liner made from? Cast iron
• Why is cast iron used? – Graphite Self lubricating properties
• What maintenance would you do on a cylinder liner – gauging and honing.
• Talk me through removing a cylinder head cover on a two stroke.
• Remove piston?
• How would you remove cylinder liner what would you remove etc.
• Why is cylinder lubrication different from crankcase oil?
• Mentioned about low sulphur fuels being used
• Why does low sulphur fuels have to be used?
• Any other air pollution which has an affect on regulations? Nox
• What equipment is used to reduce Nox? SCR or EGR
• How do SCR’s work?
• Why does less sulphur affect which oil is used.
• Why does less sulphur in fuel affect fuel pumps – less lubrication properties.
• Materials – whats an overboard valve made from?
• If a shipyard said they only have brass valves would you use it for an overboard valve?
• Why wouldn’t you use brass? Because of zinc.
• If you were to order an overboard valve what spec would it come under – Class standards.
• How often is a boiler surveyed?
• Talk me through how you would prepare for a boiler survey? Enclosed space. What gases would you test for? Carbon monoxide hydrogen sulphide. Whats the safe limits for flammable gases and toxic gases.
• What would you check for in the boiler?
• What causes pitting?
• How do you check for excess oxygen level?
• How would you remove oxygen content in feed water without chemicals?
• What temperature would the cascade tank be kept too? 90 degrees.
• Okay so fresh water now – what is a common problem on ac systems on ships? Legionella. MGN 38
• How do they prevent spread of legionella on board. Chlorine.
• Any where else you get legionella on board? Shower heads. Chlorinate 3 monthly.
• Any other way of killing bacteria? Calefaction.
• What temperature is your hot water system kept on board?
• Back to boilers How would you set a safety valve on boiler?
• How would you set the other one?
• Talk me through preparation for dry dock?
• Bottom dock inspection.
• What checks would you carry out on the rudder?
• How would you know there was damage on the rudder?
• How would you know it was full of water?
• What type of testing can be done on rudder. MPT and pressure testing?
• How would this repair be carried out? Steel used? class specification steel etc.
• Any other measurements on rudder except pintle clearances?
• Rudder carrier bearing? How would you measure rudder drop. – Trammel guage
• What type of bearing is the rudder carrier bearing? I didn’t know gave me time to think and explain what it is doing and still couldn’t tell him type. Radial bearing was the answer.
• Talk me through tail shaft removal?
• How can propeller be removed?
• What is to be checked on taper of tail shaft? Interference fit.
• How is intermediate shaft removed?
• Tell me about the muff coupling how does it work?
• What is problem with key on shaft? Stress point.
• Electrical
• Tell me how a 3 phase asynchronous induction motor works?
• What makes the rotor turn?
• What is different between an asynchronous and synchronous motor.
• Tell me how you would test a motor.
• Draw standard terminal points on the motor and how they would be labelled on the ship?
• Tell me all the insulation tests that would be carried out.
• How does a generator produce electricity?
• Draw a static excitation system?
• What does a thyristor do?
• What is it made up of? Silicone anode cathode and gate.
• What is a cycloconverter?
• Why would it be used?
• Ballast water now:
• Whats the new regulations on ballast water?
• How will ships comply with this? Treatment plants?
• Tell me about treatment plants you’ve heard of? Chemical plants and nitrogen plants to kill bacteria?
• Any other treatment plants? UV was what he was looking for which I couldn’t remember.
• What is ISM?
• How would you prepare for an ISM audit?PASS
