General chat about the Vessel I’m currently sailing on and previous experience.
1. Can you talk about your responsibilities as Chief Engineer
2. What is ISM and how to implement it into your role as Chief Engineer
3. What Certificates will you be looking for as Chief Engineer
4. IOPPC Survey
5. IAPPC Survey – (I mentioned all certs/docs), regulations 12-16 in MARPOL annex 6,
also look at 22,23,26,27,28 this will help you talk more and show in depth knowledge
6. Load line Survey
7. Lifeboats in respect to MGN 560, Tell me about the maintenance of the Falls and when
you should be checking (Stuck here didn’t know said id check the APMS and LOLER
Certificate, but it was 2.5 years and changing 5 years)
8. Dynamic testing and static testing of the davits
9. What checks would you carry out on the centrifugal braking system (Verify clutch pads
are not worn, taking measurements)
10. Picture on screen – Early and late injections of Draw Cards (ones from marine insight dot
come – check them)
11. Picture of screen – A HV network system – explain (Dennis T Hall – Practical Marine
Electrical Knowledge – Page 167 – Figure 8.25)
12. You have a 3rd call and he informs you of a fire on the auxiliary engine. – Actions as chief
13. You try to use hi-fog, but it failed, Actions as chief – (Fire control plan, firefighting, then
eventually led him to C02, explained the master’s permission etc., if you sail on cruise
ships don’t use the release from ECR back up panel method. Use the manual way of
Pilot cylinder 1 and 2. Gives a better description and show of knowledge.
14. You join a vessel, and you inspect the switchboard and find the earth fault monitoring
system turned off and the 1st engineer says it’s always been like this – actions as chief (I
said to turn it back on as it’s a safety feature mentioned earth bonding with prevents
electric shocks and corrosion as well as ICCP)
15. You want to turn it on, but the captain is refusing as it caused a black out last time –
Actions (I said that I would have to turn it on as it is a safety feature. The emergency
generator is there for a reason, as per SOLAS we need this earth fault system working
as it could back feed the electrical problem and cause severe damage to equipment
(ISM part1 – annex 10) and potential loss of life. Mention that you’ll have it in writing and
contact the super, dpa and class as record of evidence – mention cargo ship safety
construction regarding SOLAS for electrical).
16. 2 Cadets onboard how would you deal with them – (Mentioned working schedule, TRB
checklist, hours of work and rest, if you have female have separate cabin changing
rooms etc)
Very friendly examiner, helped in some respects. I talked for ages on subjects which helped. -
