Immediately put me at ease. He was very calm and friendly.

– Call the master. Call the engine room and prep engines. Run risk assessment. Assemble deck
team to pick up anchor and manoeuvre to safety.
Master is in the shower. Engineers say engines aren’t ready. Actions to avoid collision?
– I said very tentatively that if anchored in open water we could potentially calculate our drift, lift
anchor and show NUC.
No power to the generators yet. Actions?
– Wasn’t sure and he said potentially let out extra chain on the anchor to avoid collision / buy
more time. But not to worry as it wasn’t really applicable to my level yet.

Captain Yassin gave me plenty of time throughout the exam, didn’t rush me and his whole attitude
put me at ease. After the exam finished and he told me I had passed he stayed on the call for
another 5 mins to just have a chat, ask me more about my background and wish me well in my
future career.
I did Glasgow Maritime Academy Online prep course which had great instructors, was well
structured and well balanced with classes and self study. Rob Burton’s flash cards were an
excellent study tool for OOW. In the 10 days leading up to the exam I also used Whitehorse
Maritime for an OOW clinic and some 1-to-1 sessions. They were fantastic at running some mock
orals and cementing my confidence on answering exam style questions. -
