    Vs. Trevor Hughes (Examiner) and Robert Jackson (Invigilator)
    Result: Pass
    Exam time: 1 hr and 40 minutes
    Entered the call around 15 minutes early and had a brief house keeping session with Mr Hughes. He advised me that Mr Jackson would be sitting in this exam but would have no input and I should just focus on him. I showed him my room and he asked to close all software.
    1. Asked me about my last vessel
    He said for this exam I would be a Master of a Container Ship in Hong Kong.
    2. What are the functional requirements of the ISM code?

    4. How would you implement the ISM code?
    5. How would you explain orders clearly?
    6. How do you motivate crew to follow the ISM code?
    7. How would you prepare for an ISM internal audit?

    46. Where would you record it if you couldn’t attend a distress, who would you advise?
    47. Moved onto rescuing people from the water
    48. You get there and there’s a lot of people, more than you can manage,

    a. Wanted to know about contacting the coast station for extra support.
    51. You’re alongside and loading cargo and there’s water in the hold, actions?
    52. It was coming from a manhole not replaced? Actions?
    53. What are Master’s obligations for reporting Pollution?
    54. The third mate is now missing and the ship wants to sail, actions?
    55. Showed me a chart with positions drawn on, would I be happy with this?
    56. What would be my actions regarding this?
    a. I talked about a learning lesson if it was a newly promoted 3rd and how we need to comply with standing orders.
    b. I said if it was an experienced officer it would be classed as negligence
    c. I gave him an informal warning?
    57. Tell me about disciplinary proceedings?
    58. Could this be gross misconduct?
    59. Then we moved onto colregs?
    60. An overtaking PDV… how would his aspect change
    a. He is now crossing ahead
    b. You are in your cabin and hear 5 short blasts actions?
    i. would you take the conn?
    1. I said if the officer is visibly shaken or nervous I would take it but I would prefer to be stepped back so I had a better overview of the situation.
    ii. How would you get situational awareness?
    iii. What would you have expected the officer to have done?
    iv. How would you take the conn?
    v. What are you actions, vessel is 0.5 nm
    vi. How would you make the turn?

    2. I said no time for a trial manoeuvre, wheel hard over and try to pass his stern, rule 17 part B applies.
    61. RAIM at anchor? I mistakenly said about a RAIM viewed from astern.
    a. He asked how I would have expected my 3rd officer to set up his radar
    b. Difference between ground and sea stabilised
    c. Radar is sea stabilised and vector is barely moving. I said strong current which could soon affect me.
    d. He said could the vessel be stopped, I said yes could be at anchor?
    e. Where could I get more info?
    i. I said AIS but would use with caution.
    f. Now what? I said pass his stern, which side is his stern?
    62. PDV pushing another vessel
    a. Do you know length of the pushed vessel?
    b. Actions?

    b. I sounded the crew alert to muster crew, he argued that is that normal for routine traffic. I said that this wasn’t a normal situation and once my vessel is confirmed safe I should offer assistance to the vessel and potentially advise the coast station.

    a. What flag would it fly? (it was hauling nets)

    a. West cardinal in front of you heading east

    66. What rules apply in restricted vis?
    67. 3 restricted vis plots – one with just O – A – I asked to complete the plot
    a. I slowed down for one until I stopped, asked me for my new fog signal.
    b. One was just relative trails – asked me what vessels are doing what.

    69. TSS questions
    a. FV crossing – I argued that I would sound 5 short blasts as rule 10 fishing vessel does not impede the passage of a vessel – he did not like that at all. I did not feel great.

    70. Then he said final question – it will be a calculation to work out ETA from Southampton to Miami, 4725 nm at 12 knots, what time will you arrive at Pilot boarding in Miami (UTC – 4)
    71. Whilst I calculated he said to leave the call and rejoin and he would let me in when he had decided his verdict.
    a. 10 minutes later he let me in.
    b. We went over the fishing vessel in the TSS and he asked me for what a fishing vessel can do under rule 10.
    After that he said congratulations, you have met the criteria and have passed this exam. You have some points to brush up on but well done. Is there anything youd like to say to me. I thanked him and logged off.
