    1. Explain the Term Half Motor regarding Electric propulsion motors
    2. How do you alter speed for EPM’s
    3. Cycloconverter principle – detailed this
    4. Synchro Converter Principle
    5. What are your redundancies if one of your converters fails – I didn’t know this, he said no problem and moved on.
    6. Explain HV generation from alternator. – He wanted to hear about the HV cabling installation to the HV switchboard and how HV ACB’s connect to the Motor.
    7. Tell me about HV Breakers – explained SF6 being a dielectric.
    8. What is Polarity Index regarding HV breakers – Didn’t know this, but it is marked on the front of HVCB’s and is an indication of dielectric properties.
    9. Explain a Sanction to Test, talked about removing CME and having 2 authorised officers, he wanted to hear that it was used for IR testing a HV motor.
    10. HV PPE – flash suits and requirements of them
    11. Explain the Start Air System from the bottle to engine starting
    12. What would cause a Start Air valve to leak
    13. How to lap seat of Start Air valve
    14. Checks for overhauling Start Air valve
    15. Explain the issue that arises from Start Air valve leaking – Explosion
    16. Safeties to prevent this
    17. 30 Bar Air Receiver inspection with Class Surveyor – wanted to hear about NDT testing and likely areas of failures
    18. Draw me an inspection hatch of an air receiver, explain its construction and purpose.
    19. Boiler Survey – how do you inspect tubes
    20. How are tubes joined to the stack
    21. Procedure for fitting a new tube and sealing arrangement, expanded tubes, do you weld them?
    22. Physical difference in a stay tube
    23. Hydraulic test of Boiler – went through pressing it up to 1.25x Working Pressure and measuring deflection at furnace door. Wear to get test pressure – Boiler Name Plate
    24. How is a Ballast Overboard strengthened on the inside of the ship
    25. Explain how to get issued with an ISPP
    26. Dimensions of Sewage to Shore conn.
    27. You are in a zero discharge port, don’t have enough holding capacity for your stay. How do you convert another tank to Sewage holding and what do you require – a Condition of Class, pumping arrangement and not to take Soundings if a Sounding pipe is fitted.
    28. Explain your sewage treatment plant. Also asked how different level sensors on ships worked just very briefly.
    29. Types of fifi on your ships.
    30. What type of Fixed System is in a Cruise Ship dining room – Water Mist Wet section
    31. Details of Water Mist system, standby pressures, HP pressures and sequence in activation
    32. Why Watermist is selected over CO2 – No danger to human life and you don’t have to stop machinery, I explained lengthy re-entry process and dwell times.
    33. Dock Bottom walk around what to look for
    34. Stern Tube weardown and where to get reference values
    35. Stern Tube Chrome Liner has grooves worn in it at Survey. Do you have to replace the liner? – No, you can shift it axially to give it space to create new grooves and consult manufacturer on when its life has ended.
