    2. How would you know when a main engine is due for overhaul?
He specifically wanted me to say that class would have this information.
    3. How do you assess the performance of your engines and what Information are we
looking for when we assess this data?
Explaining Dr. Diesel was acceptable. Spoke about some common problems we look for.
Early/late injection. Peak pressures. Ignition angle etc.
    4. Touched briefly on CSM and CBM.
Short explanation about what CSM is and why we use it.
    Explained LO and Vibration analysis.
    5. What tests can be done on our LO outside of standard shipboard tests?
Sending samples ashore for expert analysis and spectrometry report.
    6. What would I look for when reviewing a LO analysis?
Listed all the items found in our LO reports.
    7. Why is water in the LO a problem?
Loss of oil film in liner and hydrodynamic oil film in bearings.
Also spoke about bacterial growth in sump and conditions required.
    8. How would FO get into the LO?
Mentioned leaking injector and incomplete combustion.
    9. What would cause a high temp in 1 unit?
Check sensor and fuel rack. Then the usual items: Injectors, pumps, etc. Scavenge fire.
    10. What causes turbocharger surging?

    12. What can be done to improve energy efficiency?
Told him all of the projects that my ship has implemented and future plans, goals etc.
Weather routing, hull efficiency, early departure times for ferry slow speed runs etc.
    13. What conditions need to be met in order for the emergency generator to start?
Explained what happens in the PMS when we black out. Loss of power to the main
    switchboard operating transition breakers etc.
    14. How many starting methods does an emergency generator need to have?
2 methods. We have battery and air start.
    15. The ship you are on has grounded. What are your actions as Chief Eng?
Mentioned People Environment Property, damage control plan, and Load Line.
    Inform, muster, monitor, checks, etc.
    16. The ship has a large 2-stroke engine. Would you do any additional checks?
Mentioned possible prop impact affecting the Main Engine. As soon as I mentioned
deflections and the bedplate he moved on.
    17. Asked why we take deflections?
I spoke about bearing wear then he mentioned bedplate deformation. Linking back to the
    previous question.
    18. There is a fire alarm in the main engine room. What are your actions as Chief Eng?
Spoke about initial actions, identifying a fire, then what I would do in the event of a fire.

    21. We went back to Q19. Asked me to go through the system 1 part at a time.
As soon as I said expansion valve it hit me. Water would cause frost to form on the
    valve.
