I joined the meeting 15 minutes early, and he joined the meeting about 5 mins before. After
Documents checks he read the MCA exams policy. he asked if I am aware of the new exam recording
requirements and that although I will not have a copy of the recording,
Tell me about your last ship and your vessels experiences. Said that I have sailed on offshore supply
vessel Capt. Kris Askey told me that throughout the exam I would be on a UK flagged general cargo
vessel.
1. What do understand by GRT and NRT. Standard answer.
2. Tell me how you will take over as a master on a UK general cargo vessel vessel alongside in
port? Talked him through all the hand over and taking over procedures and also updating
the OLB the crew employed onboard and also the narrative sections with fuel ROB.
3. Now your vessel is at sea then the chief engineer informed you that 2
nd Engr is sick food
poising, what actions will you take as the Master. Talked through all the procedures also
making reverence to ship masters medical guide, also seeking medical advice and all
proceeding recoded and logged in the logbook, also updating the narrative section of the
official log book.
4. He then asked won’t you investigate how the food poison happened on your vessel? Talked
through all I will do and from my findings and actions I will take.
5. How often do you conduction accommodation inspections and what will you check during
your inspections. Standard answers.
6. Now your vessel is back to port tell me the procedures on how you will get the sick 2nd Engr
to shore for medical treatment? Standard answers also talked about getting a new reliver
and if no reliver available I will apply for a dispensation from MCA and ensure its doesn’t
affect the crew rest hours.
7. New Philippines 2nd Engineer joining. What would you Check as per STCW
convention? How do you know medical is acceptable in UK flag ship. Told him as per
MSN 1815 list of countries whose medical certificate is accepted is stated there.
8. Validity of STCW certificate name which are they.
9. Your vessel back to sea 2O called and inform you gyro compass stopped working what action
will you take and who will you inform of the situation?
10. Now you manage to get to the nearest port and you are informing no service technician who
can fix the gyro compass is available what actions will you take?
11. On your way to the next port the 2O called you and inform you he saw on the radar screen
(he shared the screen showing 12 blips) what actions will you take? Told him what on the
screen is a blip from SART and it shows there some survival in close vicinity, then lead to
search and rescue scenarios.
12. He then shows me a drawing of my ship putting wind and current on my STBD side and also
the position of the vessel rescue boat on STBD side and ask me how will I launce my vessel
recue boat? Told him I will swing around and make Lee to Launch the Rescue Boat. He
further says on the lee there is too much sea swell how will go about launching your rescue
boat? At this point I became confused.
13. Vessel in port sudden experience list what could be the cause? Told him I will carry out an
investigation to determine if its list or Loll.
14. How will you correct angle of Loll.
15. Draw an angle of Loll on a GZ curve, and explain.
16. C/E Informed you that ballast water treatment plant not working due to muddy water while
vessel Discharging in port what will your actions be?
17. What is towage and salvage.
18. What is Bill of laden.
Finally, he said I have fulfilled the criteria and I have PASSED.
Capt. Kris Askey is a very fair examiner, very calm and he has no problem to rephrase
the question. He makes you feel comfortable through the exam.
