    All setup correctly and I logged in 15mins before.
    He logged in on the dot.
    Introduction with slides highlighting the conducts to be observed during online exam.
    1. Initially asked me about my last ship – Including the trading pattern and general information of the vessel. Emphasis to put myself in the Master position in my last ship.

    2. As Master what are your preparations prior departure? Include procedures, duties of each department, completion of loading what to do?

    3. What is ISM and what are all the relevant documents and certifications? Explained DOC and SMC (Issue and renewal dates) and procedures highlighted in SMS, last ship SMS what it was called?
    P – Implement the safety and environmental protection policy
    M – Motivate crew to follow that policy
    C – Give orders in clear and simple manner. E.g. standing instructions, night order
    V – Verify that specific requirements are being met
    R – Periodically Review SMS and report Accidents and NC’s

    4. What it says about Master inside SMS? Master should have overriding authority – explain further with examples.

    5. MLC – requirement and what is SEA?

    6. Showed me synoptic weather chart (UK). Showed to location and asked me to explain what the weather like on each location. – Wind, sea, swell (estimated) and overall weather (temperature and expected cloud) – Depression and Anti-cyclones.

    7. Preparation when approaching/inside restricted Visibility. What you expect your OOW to do once they inform you? – Highlight all the preparation and

    8. Rule 19 – Showed me a slide of radar plotting (black background with yellow dots) 3 targets but he asked me to explain each one and action for each target individually. (ensure to say the commence systematic observation and carry on to completed the plot). 1st target on port quarter no issues moving away and no CPA, 2nd target CPA 0, action A/C to stbd with explanation. last target OAW all at same point on Stb quarter. (Vessel same speed and course)

    9. He showed me a radar screen (X-Band) – Ask me what is wrong with it? – explained the current setup and dangers of incorrect setup and inputs.

    10. Following the incorrect setup on the radar, the 2nd officer was on duty and he told me that I just randomly came by on his watch and seeing the radar was setup as such. And the 2nd officer was wondering outside not properly doing lookout. What are your actions? Highlight the Merchant code of conduct.

    11. After initial action what are the follow-up actions to deal with the 2nd officer as he has already done 3 minor mistakes and finally the above incompetent actions? Just culture and request for reliever. (explained type of warnings – Verbal, Informal, formal and final/dismissal)

    12. A vessel has been laid out for 9 months alongside a pier. What to expect when it comes to magnetic compass? And what to do for correcting the magnetic compass? – explained effects of both soft and hard irons. And when to call the compass adjuster and do compass swings.

    After that he stopped me and said “Ok I believe that’s all and you passed”. It took me a few seconds to digest it while seeing him smiling. I said thank you.
    Then he briefly explained how I went and what he was looking for throughout the exam. Mainly the ability to make decision as Master and the keywords within each topic he was asking. Everything was very quick because he is happy to move on as long as I explained it together with the keywords.
    That’s all I could remember during the exam.
    Captain James Gilbert was a very pleasant examiner allowing me to adapt and time to answer the questions. And he always reminds me to use own words and explanation when required.
