Masters (Unlimited) Oral – Cruise Ship
    Online exam
    19th Nov 2020
    Liam Schembri
    Examiner: James Gilbert
    45min

The examiner was very fair and made the exam seem like a conversation throughout. Checked camera and microphone for correct function and asked if I was alone and not having a personal phone on me.
Was told I would be asked all questions as a Master onboard.

    • Joining your vessel for the first time as a Master, actions?
    • How would you make sure the ship is legally ready to sail?
    • Showed me a synoptic chart – asked to describe weather on different locations
    • Leaving Southampton, what would you expect from the pilot?
    • Restricted visibility – 3rd Officer calls you, what would you expect him to do before you arrive?
    • Showed me a target on a radar screen and asked what I would expect the 3rd Officer to do
    • Tell me about Rule 19 – Wanted to hear avoid altering to port for a vessel forward of the beam
    • What certificates will you check as master onboard?
    • Tell me about ISM?
    • You get a call about a MOB, Force 8 conditions – Actions? Wanted to hear about dynamic risk assessments
    • You get a call from Chief Engineer, huge engine fire – Actions?
    • Who would you account for before releasing CO2? Crew + Pax
    • V/L is without propulsion, Chief Eng wants to go into E/R – Actions?
    • V/L is 30nm from land, company says they will send a Tug boat in 2-3 days for a very cheap price – Will you accept as Master? Wanted to hear about Master overriding authority and taking a closer tug using LOF
    • Two crew members go ashore and have a fist fight, security brings them to your office with a black eye – Actions as Master?
    • Under what regulation can you fire them? SEA + MLC
    • What is contained in a SEA?
    • What errors do you expect of Magnetic compass after being laid up? Retentive error + call the compass adjuster
    • He said ok this is the end of the exam and I have heard enough to pass you, Congratulations.

The examiner was very good in making the exam feel like a conversation and when something was not clear he would ask other questions until he heard what he was after.
