    Exam: Online using Microsoft Teams
    Date: 01 October 2020
    Examiner: Kaizer Ali
License: Master (Yacht) 3000 Unlimited Areas
    Time: 01h30m
    Result: Pass

I logged in 15 min before the start. Examiner was on time. He was very courteous throughout and explained all exam procedures beforehand.
This is not a chronological report, rather a recollection of all questions asked:

    – At the start he referenced my SRB and asked a few questions about current ship, capacity employed, any additional duties such as Safety/Security Officer. Said all questions will be on British Flagged less than 3000GT.
    – Magnetic Compass: I can’t remember how the question was phrased, but he wanted to know what checks for mag whilst navigating. I ran out of steam after errors and log so started talking about maintenance. Also wanted to know when will you get compass adjuster in.
    – Bridge Equipment on board. Asked for limitations of AIS, GPS (how is PDOP displayed), Auto Pilot. How to change from Manual Steering to Auto Pilot.
    – Voyage Planning vs. Passage Planning. What’s the difference? Explained both and APEM. (Thanks Vishnu!)
    – Considerations for Lookout and Bridge Watch composition which led to Master’s Standing Orders (MGN for safe watch keeping)
    – All Ship’s Certificates
    – Safety Equipment (LSA and FFA) as per SOLAS and LY requirements – wanted quantities, service, records incl. GMDSS
    – ISM: Duties of Master, Duties of Safety Officer, contents of SMS, Safety Meeting Agenda,
    – ISPS – What is DoS, when to do DoS
    – CSR – Process of amendment to CSR
    – MLC – 16 topics briefly discussed and some in more details (How for 18 and under)
    – PSC – CERS, THETIS, Risk Profile, HR ST LR, (MGN on PSC)
    – Preps for Heavy Weather and Restricted Visibility
    – We started talking about ECDIS but he asked what was my primary means of Navigation and I said always had been paper, so he didn’t touch too much on ECDIS.
    – Instructions for the Watchkeeper when in Coastal Waters
    – Marpol Annex 1 – Equipment as per IOPPC, SOPEP, What entries in the ORB
    – Garbage: Management Plan, Record Book, Placards
    – Had to describe lights and shapes for NUC, RAM, CBD. This question through me as I was expecting smarties board. I only mentioned the all round lights and he noted something in his notepad. I then said, I neglected these are in addition to for RAM, CBD but he was happy. Said he only wanted additional. Wanted to know about making way for NUC
    – Several Boys incl. New Wreck, Isolated Danger, Cardinals and Preferred Channel. Only wanted lights and identification
    – 4 Situations: Smarties board vsl aground over 50, day time vsl aground, 2 restricted vis
    – Rule 10: Wanted FLACID. He didn’t recognise Anchored vessel
    – Rule 6: Quoted in its entirety when we spoke about watch keeping and preps for heavy weather
    – SAR: IAMSAR and which search pattern for a confident datum.I said expanding square but he was more inclined to Sector. I said both can be used for single vessel.
    – Somewhere in this exam he asked what markings for shackles?! HAHAHAH
    – Stability: Explain squat, UKC and interaction. I explained both with vessel and bank even though he only mentioned bank.

This is all I remember. Thanks to Vinil and Shayne for the prep, and for Vishnu for the mock oral. And thanks to my classmates for the support and after class groups. These really played a part in my understanding and knowledge.
