Online exam via Teams. It was a bit unsettling awaiting the examiner join the meeting. Once Kate joined she ran through the protocol and asked me to pan around the room.

An exam very much centred on my experience and almost every question came from something I mentioned in the first few minutes, put me on ship I worked on and I mentioned id been in dry dock so I got those questions too.

Exam started with her asking what ship types I’m on and the areas I’ve sailed in?
    • Cruise ships and RFA all around the world.

Responsibilities of Chief mate on cruise ship
    • Stability, PMS – stopped me there and asked about PMS which brought us to ISM

ISM code – she let me just talk and I went into SOCREM, PMCVR

At some point she stopped me and asked me about stability and ballast.
    • Went into ballast, certification, plan and told we just had a treatment plan installed in our last dry dock log entries

Dry docking – P-force, stability what to do with any cargo left on board
    • Bottom plugs, asked about plans and what to do with them
    • What to inspect on first entry into dock when dry, I mentioned equipment to be covered up and draft marks to be noted to be re painted after sand blasting

    5 yearly lifeboats
    • GMA notes. However she asked about a test on the hooks to be done before and after by manufacturer which I didn’t get – she told me non-destructive test with a dye pen before and after on the hooks.

    What to do with anchors
    • Lay out inspect repaint is what I said but in the feedback she told me she was looking for link testing. The dimensions of the links are given in the cert and they measure to see if still within parameters

Then she asked about frame numbers on the bottom and what they could be used for. I flustered for a while on this and eventually she clarified that we were now out of dry dock and I said hull inspections, seemed happy don’t know if it was right.

    Preps for heavy weather.

Preps for RV – wanted rule 19 explaining

What is interaction, what is bank effect?

At anchor and another vl is approaching and you are on watch and you are concerned about CPA.
Call master, engines ready for man, ETC
Don’t really know how this went as she seemed to let me manoeuvre out of the way with engines and then told me there was a fire in the laundry.

RV Plot – overtaking a vessel, had me plot it on my sheet and complete plot.

    Definition of restricted Vis

    ROR – Slides:
    – TSS – explain actions of others and your final action. See below.
Quite a difficult one- I was the vessel following the lane but she wanted to know about the other two in a head on situation and what they were doing. I said they were either going to have depart from rules because they would pass the wrong way down the lane or depart by not going to stbd in a head on situation. As a final answer I said the vessel at the bottom would depart from r14 and go to port and stay in the separation zone.

She said in the feedback that this was a clear explanation even though it doesn’t seem clear now I’m righting it so good luck with that.

    – Open Sea – RAM dredging, clear to pass on one side
    – Overtaking

Lights & Shape slides: ID/Day/Fog/Aspect/Action only when asked
    – NUC
    – PDV at anchor
    – SV less 20m
    – RAM dredging
    – Aground
    – Pilot vessel
    – Tug & tow greater than 200m
    – Tug & Tow Ram

How long is a long blast?
    – Gave answer as per COLREGS – 4/6 seconds

Buoyage Slides: Name/top mark/light/ Action only when asked
    – Various in/out
    – Various intercardinal headings – MFP
    – She then gave me safe water mark – what is Morse alpha
(I read in another report that she likes to hear you check chart and your passage plan when you run into cardinals or isolated dangers so I said it before she asked and she looked pleased )— MFP?

Probably more but I cant remember, good luck!
