Kate McDonald – Online – MFPOnline exam via Teams. It was a bit unsettling awaiting the examiner join the meeting. Once Kate joined she ran through the protocol and asked me to pan around the room.
Exam started with her asking what ship types im on?
– Pax RoRo Ferries. I gave her details on my Last ship, company and my job role as ch mate.Joining a cargo ship as Master – What would you expect getting out of taxi?
– I gave my answer as per GMA notes and made a point of mentioning the safety and security familiarisation.

What SOLAS certificates would you check on joining?
– As per GMA notes.What MARPOL certificates would you have onboard?
– IOPP, IAPP…….. She had to guide me by asking what are the Annexes of Marpol. She lead me to ISPP cert. (she later discussed this point during the debrief)How would you check that ship is meeting MARPOL requirements?
– Sample logbooks. Placards, discharge criteria, bunker and garbage notes etc.What is the survey/renewal window of certs?

– She then gave me safe water mark
– Gave me the ISO danger again and asked if I would do anything different? I said that I will leave stbd side clear as it is a danger of limited extent. (she told me in feed back that I should have taken all way off and done a RA and why would my passage plan have me passing so close)— MFP?
– What is Isophase & Occulting? I couldn’t remember Occ —MFPEnd of exam.
Debrief:
She asked me how I think I done. I said I thought I generally answered well – except I knew it was all over with the ISO/OCC error.
She told me I examined very well and she wanted to pass me. She said I gave a lot of detail and had strong general knowledge. She said she was willing to forgive me forgetting the ISPP cert when talking about MARPOL.
She went on to talk about why she would have to fail me for not knowing definition of ISO/OCC and taking wrong action for Iso danger – I argued with her on this point but couldn’t deny that I couldn’t give a textbook answer for Iso/OCC. -
