Keymaster1
Chief Mate/Master 3000,
Examination (Liverpool Marine office-Online, Experience – Gas Carriers.
Result – Pass, Time – 1h 45 min
Logged on 10 mins early, Started Promptly on time. First 15 Minutes going through rules for online exams, no googling or looking away from computer, no mobile phone or electronic device nearby. confirmed I was using the APP and not the browser.
Ask which country am taking the exams from. Looked at my discharge and said I have experience onboard LNG ships, and went on to explained I will be on an LNG carrier in the capacity of a chief mate, except otherwise stated.
Joining ship as CO for the first time, done with company briefing, start from the ship side, what will you do? Standard GMA answer
During discharge, you noticed that cargo temperature began to rise, action?
Done with discharge and back at sea, you are on watch and got a fire alarm on the panel, purifier room, action? Said I was going to verify that it was not a false alarm, send someone to check, then went on with standing GMA answer (SPARC). He was happy when I said the crew will muster with the life jackets and immersion suits as well just in case the situation changes.
How will you prepare your fire party to fight the fire?
What type of lifeboats were on your last ship? How will you carry out a thorough annual Inspection? Those to witness and participate in this annual inspection. Who can the MCA delegate for such inspection? Give examples of authorised Recognised Organisations… I only remembered four of them and told him I could look them up on the MCA website.
Who makes the SMS? Which regulation is complied with for making the SMS? How is the SMS audited? How is the ISM SMC audited? When is the stipulated time frame to ask for it to be renewed?
You are the safety officer, and the third officer ask you to teach him how to carry out the monthly GMDSS test, action? Which document or books will you refer him to get additional trainings on GMDSS and others? (I blabbed on about
2
other related publications and manuals, and he said and? I started becoming nervous, he was patients and kept waiting until I mentioned training manual).
How will you prepare for loading?
How will you prepare vessel for dry dock, he said documentation already done and sent to dry dock. Action? Stand GMA answer plus cargo tank management from a hazardous space to a safe space (that is what he wanted), went on to talk extensively about dd preps. How do you know when the atmosphere is safe for entry?
You are in dry dock and noticed damage to bottom plating, what plan will you need to consult to arrange repairs? Here again I stuttered and said tank expansion plan… and he was like, tank? Then I corrected myself and said Shell expansion plan. What information is contained on the shell expansion plan? Gave as much answer as possible here until he was happy to move on.
Outside of ships bottom, how to prepare for it and requirements? where will you look to find out if your ship is eligible for an in-water inspection? What are the conditions for an in-water inspection? who will be present during an inspection of outside of ships bottom?
You now left dry dock, and while under-way, noticed reduced visibility. Action? Standard GMA answer.
The here he tried to share his screen and I could not see it (in my mind, I was like omg, please this network don’t even start now) and he was polite enough to ask me to log out and log back on. Hew!
Logged back on and he tried again, it worked, and radar plotting sheet was right in my face
3
Radar Plot – Showed me a radar display with relative vectors and asked me to give overview of the situation with 3 vessels, then wanted action and which rules apply for each individually followed by action for all 3 together. (I said I needed more info) and he said that line is my heading marker and I have been tracking those targets so action.
here he gave me speed as 10knots, here he wanted me to go through all the wordings of rule 19, we stayed here for a while until he was satisfied.
Buoyage – Identify, Light and action – Stb’d hand region A inbound, East cardinal heading North, special mark buoy can, why that action, how will I know how to pass her, told him will treat it like lateral mark buoys and he wanted more and said open sea, how will I know… what can I get on the chart, buoyage direction!
In sight: before he started said I should give full actions as if on the ship’s bridge.
I assumed that it was overtaking me, and he confirmed that my assumption was right before I went on with my answer

open sea: S/V
TSS: S/V
Smartie Power Point full description, vessel, length, nav status, day shape, fog signal, action!
-Vsl at anchor over 50m in length – One red light -Trawlers (got a lot of that one) -Vsl aground less than 50m -Pilot vessel -Vessel engaged in towing partly submerged object less than 25m in breadth
*wanted to hear call the engine room along with 5 short blasts and call the master. Reason: with large alterations, there will be additional load on the engine, to avoid a situation where your engine will trip off in the middle of an avoiding action, inform the duty engineer first. Quiet a sound point, especially when you are on steam turbine ships.
These are the ones I could remember now. Do not hesitate to ask if you are in any doubt.
Special thanks to my colleagues, especially Kumar, for his support and drilling.
@Adi your screengrabs and materials were very helpful.
I am sure I stumbled in some areas, but also I didn’t allow that to demoralise me, in areas of my strength, I made sure to keep talking until he is the one to stop me. The examiner was happy with the answers in the area of cargo, thanks to Capt. Shane.
