    Master Unlimited 28th Jan 2020
    Glasgow Marine Office
    Examiner: SA
    Candidate: Nitish Kumar
    Result: Pass
    Time: 1 hr 20mins approx
Type Of Ships: Offshore Supply Vessels (DP Ships)

Started 15 mins late at 10:45. First was fire alarm and other formalities and then checked my seamen book, coc and passport. After that straight onto question number 1.

    1. Placed Gnomonic chart and Mercator chart on table and asked me to plan a passage from Canada to Aberdeen. Need to consider all aspect like arrival dep preps, certificate checks etc.
    2. What will be the preferred sailing, Great circle or rhumb line? And then other departure preps. Need to mention ice, depression and all other factors.
    3. Once in passage then heavy weather. Heavy weather preparation.
    4. What are the certificates you check before Transocean passage?
    5. Destination changed to Antwerp, amend the passage plan and give other factors.
    6. Arrival document as per FAL convention?
    7. Bunkering in port. What to check at management level?
    8. Entries in Oil Record Book.
    9. How many oil samples to be taken for bunkering? At this point I said I am not confirm but logically should be before start, in mid way and on completion.
    10. What is in bunker delivery note?
    11. Found discrepancies in oil record book, action?
    12. What to do if you find a clerical error in entry? I said check and then cut with single line and master+ CE+ one senior officer to countersign.
    13. Dry-docking preparations before and during. I described stability concerns also here.
    14. Whose checklist and permit you will follow, dock or company? I said will follow both and more focus on stringent one.
    15. 3 engine cadets joining, what you check? Certificates, training requirement, young person, risk assessment, rest hours etc.
    16. Container fire, IMDG EMS says not to use water, Action? What are the extra items need to carry if have DG Doc?
    17. Fire expanding, action? At this point I said I will use all available means including water jets to control and meanwhile will prepare abandoning(also other stuffs).
    18. Gave me single screw RH prop ship with BT and need to berth in tight space with offshore wind. Told me that whichever side you like you can berth. At this point I was little bit confused as he mention the anchors (actually he kept two magnets on bow of the ship and said these are your anchors) and should I must use? But any how I decided not to use anchor as it was a offshore wind and I had a BT. Do not forget to mention about bank effect while entering breakwater and transverse thrust while going A/S.
    19. RV, four targets and as usual I said commence and complete plot and he put W. I double checked with him for O & A and he confirmed. One on port bow, one port quarter, one on stbd beam and one on stbd bow(this one was stopped and no risk of collision). I asked him for stbd beam target that is it on my beam? He said you find out. Then I told him that I will check and now I take it as stbd beam. And then action was slow down. He asked me what other vessel’s will do? And I described the actions they should take.
    20. He made a channel with red and green magnets(no shape, all small magnets). Kept one vessel(stbd was red and port was green magnet). Three smarty board, one stbd side with Tug and tow more than 200 mtr, one port side trawler shooting net, and ahead pilot vessel at anchor. Asked me to identify (with all details) and action. Action as per narrow channel.
    21. Removed all above except magnets and asked me check if you are going in correct direction if this is in Japan. I said will check with publications that Japan is in which region and then he said it’s region B( This was just to double check and first he said he don’t know but the moment I mentioned that I will refer to publications, he said its region B), I said it is correct. Then he asked me what should be the shape of red magnet? And I replied cone.

And he said PASSED. And stamped my noe.

Big thanks to Prem, Ramani and Rahman my flat mates and great friends whose support was invaluable.
