Experience – Offshore and RoPax Vessels
23/11/20
1.5 Hour Online Exam
PassIntroduced himself and explained cheating policy and asked to see around the room, and also to verify that I did not have any other pages open on my laptop. Also asked what type of laptop I was using and to hold my passport up for him to check.
For most of the exam I was on a container ship, but he also asked some questions about Tankers at one point.
– You are at home and get the call to join a Container Vessel as Master, talk through your actions from getting the call.
o Described the entire process from getting the call all the way through to completing handover with off signing master.
– You mentioned ship certificates, talk me through ship certificates.
– What is validity of Loadline Cert
– Talk me through the survey windows for Loadline Cert.
– What information is on a safe manning document?
– Can the vessel sail with just the number of crew listed on the safe manning document?
– Do you still have articles on board?
– The ship is due to depart Liverpool for New York and you notice that all class issued certificates are due to expire in one week, what will you do?
– How will you advise the Chief Officer with regards to loading the vessel?
– How will you allow for and calculate ice accretion on the voyage?
o I described about ensuring sufficient initial GM, taking on extra ballast to lower G, have regard for the fact that the ice accretion may be unsymmetric and cause the vessel to list, however he wanted to know specifically how I would calculate the ice accretion…
– You can see from the forecast that a hurricane is in the vicinity and you are going to cross the path of the storm, actions?
– Talk to me about the dangerous semi-circle?
– Talk to me about the track of the storm, what direction will it move?
– How will you prepare the vessel for heavy weather?
– You are approaching the coast of America and one of the AB’s develops chest pain, actions?
– Not close enough to the coast for a medivac – what will you do as Master on board?
– You are on the way in to New York and the vessel runs aground, actions?
– You get notification from the Chief Engineer that there is an oil slick around the vessel, he also tells you that the Motorman fell down the stairs with the impact of the grounding and is seriously hurt. At the same time the Chief Officer reports that 4 tanks have been breached – actions?
– How will you know if the vessel will be stable to refloat or not?
– How many compartments would a container vessel be able to withstand flooding?
– What entries would you make in the OLB?
– The chef comes to you and complains that the motorman has been abusive to him, your actions?
– A few weeks later the same complaint is made, actions?
– What vessels require a ships cook to be on board?
– You are on a tanker, how will you know what types of cargo you can load?
– With document will you as master expect to have reviewed regarding crew safety prior to loading?
o This stumped me a bit, I initially said risk assessments but he had to guide me a little bit by saying it would be a similar document that the chief engineer may review prior to loading fuel – then it came to me he was looking for MSDS sheets.
Ship handling – he put up a screen with a large vessel approaching a quayside at a fairly shallow angle, no tide and an offshore wind of 10 knots. Single screw RHFPP, no bow thruster and no tugs available. He wanted me to give him engine settings and rudder angles throughout. This led to a discussion on mooring arrangements for a container vessel, and how the breast lines would be ineffective due to the angle at which they would need to be put out so as not to obstruct the gantry cranes.
Restricted VisibilityROR
Shared a screen with a vessel 1 point abaft my starboard beam
The rest were lights, wanted all information including day shapes and fog signals and then asked my actions.
