    Examiner: Cpt. Nowshad Jobair
    Liverpool
    OOW Unlimited
    Fail
Signed in about 30 minutes before my exam time. The examiner was a bit late and I thought I did something wrong so I immediately panicked. However, he eventually came on and apologised for being late and started to introduce himself and explain the procedures to be followed throughout the exam.
Asked for a 360 of the room and asked to see my Passport as well.
He went through my discharge book, asked me where the vessel traded and what type of vessel it was.
The exam started and he placed me on a Bulk Carrier trading worldwide.
 Plan a passage from Trinidad to Liverpool.
 Ok, the distance is 4000 nm and the ship’s speed is 15 knots. Calculate how long it will take to get there. (He said I can use a calculator)
 You mentioned ALRS what will you use that for.
 Where will you find the information for the time difference in your passage from the ALRS.
 How would you check if the charts are corrected and how to correct them.
 What would you find in the Weekly NTM
 What is the Cumulative NTM and what does it contain.
 Your vessel is getting ready to depart how are you going to prepare the vessel.
 You mentioned steering gear test how do you carry that out. (when I was talking about this he said I’m giving him a textbook explanation and I need to say as if I am carrying it out)
 What would the engineers be doing during the steering gear test.
 What does the ROT indicator show
 When is the lifeboat launched and manoeuvred in the water
 How would you carry out launching life-boat.
When I was done explaining he asked how to recover it.
 Anchoring procedures. You are required to go forward to carry out checks to prepare for anchoring how would you do this
 What is anchor aweigh and what does it mean by walking back the anchor.
 How would you set up your radar
 Your radar has been off for a few days how would you start it then. What is the procedure now.
     MARPOL contents
 What is the sulphur content allowed in fuel from the new regulations.
 How would you take-over from an officer.
 What about GMDSS. What are the checks you would carry out.
(Mentioned the daily weekly and monthly)
 Are all ships required to carry this equipment? Mentioned the GMDSS required in respective Sea Areas.
 Initial alarm on Fire Alarm panel indicating a fire in the engine room. Actions?
 He said I am on the Fire team now. How would I check my SCBA and why would I perform the check to verify if pressure is escaping from the mask if it’s not sealed properly.
    You encounter Restricted Visibility. Actions?
So this is where I messed up
He shows me an image from an actual Radar with 3 targets showing their relative vectors. (Tried my best to recreate what he showed me)
He asked me which vessels are a ROC and what would be my action.
We moved on to buoyage (Type, light, action Inbound)
    Region A
     Port hand lateral buoy
    Region B
     Preferred channel to Port
South Cardinal Mark vessel heading East
    New wreck marking buoy
ROR Smarty board (Type, Size, Light, Nav status, Day, Fog, Aspect, Action)
    1. PDV seen from starboard
He then said the PDV is 5nm away and 2 points on my port bow. Actions?
    2. Trawler seen from starboard.
Trawler now 5nm away 4 points on Port Bow. Actions?
    3. CBD seen from starboard
She is 2 points on your port bow. Actions?
    4. Vessel engaged in towing. Tow exceeds 200m. Actions?
    5. Vessel aground.
He brought back up the radar screen. At this point I knew I failed because I really didn’t know how to change my answer he tried to help by asking me if I was sure about my answers. This was a weak area for me I tried to do as much practice as I possibly could have still trying to study other topics.
The examiner was very fair he actually gave me another shot at the radar plot so he’s not quick to fail you.
    Best of Luck to everyone.
