Asked about my last vessel.Told him that i have sailed on Gearless Bulk Carrier, carried Iron ore, Coal and grain from Australia-China, South America-China.
Put me as a Master on Bulk carrier of MCA flag.
1.2/Off and deck cadet joining , What all documents you will check.
He was more into CEC , Purpose and validity.
He is not having ecdis type specific certificate, what will you do?
Answer-Told him that i will inform manning office and they will contact the maker and arrange for his online CBT type specific course before vsl departure and then will raise NC against the company.
All requirements of young cadet apart from his documents.
1. Primary means of Navigation is Paper chat but 2/Off joined has only worked on Ecdis and has no experience on Paper chart. How you will trained him, told him everything i remember about paper charts and also added that i will Raise NC against company for sending an inexperienced officer and not with ship specific & also will monitor his work and performance closely.
2. Then he told me you are going from Hobart(South Australia to Chile)- Showed me synoptic chart and asked to describe the weather condition for next few days including wind direction.Synoptic chart was showing bad weather all around.
3. Then he told me since its bad weather expecting ahead of your voyage as per synoptic chart .Please carry out bad weather preparation.— Answer him as per GMA notes more specifically about Sea Protest with objective evidence , why need to reduce RPM and why CE wants more propeller Immersion.
4. Then in between bad weather there is a black out -Action , somehow CE restore power but only can give slow steaming as there is a damage in A.E and also fuel oil tanks are contaminated with water, How you will manoeuvre with slow steaming- Told him about heave too and proceed for Port of refugee to carry out repairs, will push the Tech superintendent and DPA to arrange for surveys if not agreeing then inform Flag.
5. Now in port of refugee what all certificates effected— Safety construction and IOPP. Either company will arrange for permanent repairs or temporary repair with condition of class.
6. Now your schedule is delayed due to all above , what will happen—Told him about off hire times and record keeping but he was more specific about sea protest for which i have considered all objective evidence in my preparation, so i explained him about sea protest as per GMA notes as it will protect my owners from any Financial losses due to delays.
7. Then he showed me a slide a vessel stbd side alongside With right hand propeller, BT, Onshore wind BF 3, Tide from astern 1 knot, do the unberthing and explain all in sequence what you will do first — Took time and answered asper ship handling videos on periscope.
8. After unberthing , Suddenly hydraulic pipe of fwd winch burst and oil spilled on deck and in water— Action
9. Colreg situation-Open sea one CBD on port bow and FV on stbd bow rok. With both…Then in tss you are in the lane fv in seperation zone on port bow, CBD overtaking from astern and 2 PDV on stbd bow crossing all with ROK— Action, 5 blasts for cbd overtaking and fv on port bow , then alter course to port take all way off and stop my vessel instantly……Ok all clear how will you resume your passage—Join the lane at small angle…….Next situation open sea 2 pdv more then 50 m nearly head on or 1 point stbd bow with Rok and a vessel stern overtaking with rok, 3/Off called you last moment , what will be your action—-sound 5 blasts for vessel stern if not taking action and then bold alteration of course to port..Quote rule 2B
10. Lights- sailing vessel, single red light & Separate situation ,red-green light underway and possible making way… Trawler more then 50 m underway stopped and anchor and net fast upon obstruction— Also asked how does Papa flag look like…. Then Ram lights of dredger and showing 2 red lights………FV making way seen from port side…. Ram Pdv more then 50m but ram lights and green side light were near fwd masthead light.. very typical situation.
11. Buoys, North, south cardinal mark with easterly heading& then special mark buoy, all description and which side to pass.
12. Complete the plot for RV one target port side at 2 points fwd of my beam, own vessel was at abeam to this target with ROK and then one vessel abaft the beam stbd side overtaking with ROK—Slow down because port side vessel will alter co to port only as own is at her abeam.
Then finally he said exam went successfully and you are passed…
Simon is very Fair surveyor and he always leads you if you forgot something and he will take the word out from your mouth which he wants to hear… -
