    1. Write down a set of crankshaft deflections and explain the reading – Wanted graph too.
    2. What are you looking for in these readings? Shape of graph?
    3. How do you measure main bearing clearances? What if you can’t fit a feeler gauge in? Use lead wire or a poker gauge if possible.
    4. What lube oil tests are done onboard?
    5. Why are they done and what are you looking for?
    6. Why would there be water in the oil and what is acceptable levels?
    7. Explain TBN
    8. Why is reserve alkalinity important?
    9. What shore side testing is done?
    10. What metals are you looking for?
    11. Define white metal and its composition.
    12. What jacket water tests are done onboard?
    13. What chemicals are used to treat the water (Didn’t want brand names)
    14. What type of nitrites are added (He said there was many different types)
    15. What boiler water tests are done onboard? What chemicals used (Again didn’t want brand names)
    16. How often is the boiler surveyed? What are you looking for?
    17. Why would sludge be found/form in the water space?
    18. Explain your understanding of stability (Described centre of buoyancy, gravity and metacentric height. Also mentioned angle of loll and how it effects stability
    19. What is draught and what is the area between the water line and main deck called?
    20. What convention(s) cover stability?
    21. What certification relates to stability?
    22. Name as many conventions as you can
    23. How do we effect stability as engineers in the ER (Wanted fuel transfers and asked what we do before transferring fuel)
    24. What would happen to centre of buoyancy, gravity and metacentric height if cargo was added (used a drawing I had done earlier as an example to show where they would move)
    25. What documentation should be sent to the docking master?
    26. What is a docking plan? What is in it and why is it important?
    27. What is the shell expansion plan?
    28. What is the 2nd engineer doing while the dock is being pumped down? (I missed isolating the stern tube header tank and switching off the cathodic protection)
    29. What checks do you do on the dock bottom (fwd to aft)
    30. Why is there a slimey liquid flowing from the propeller shaft? ( Mentioned at this point I had forgotten the stern tube header tank)
    31. How do we measure propeller drop?
    32. What firefighting systems did you have onboard?
    33. Explain in detail how hi fog works.
    34. CO2 what is done with system in dry dock?
    35. Legislation that covers firefighting systems onboard?
    36. You use 440v onboard but dry dock tells you it can only provide 380v. You’re in the middle east and can’t get a package generator onboard or use your own power. Will 380v be ok?
    37. How will it affect the machinery? What can be done to rectify the problem? (I mentioned perhaps using a frequency converted but I didn’t know enough to explain further.)
